Had an idea!

Well, I just finished stage 3 of my DL program.
Stage 1 was to figure out the lift, figure out the technique, the form and all that. I started at around 80#, worked myself up to 200# in something like 12 weeks.
Stage 2 was to start going heavy, but still try to hit higher reps than normal. Instead of doing the CP program, I did a modified version of Bill Starr's 5x5 version using DLs instead of squats as a staple. Went from 200# to about 280# in 10 weeks.
Stage 3 was the heavy stage. The brutal stage. The painful stage. Did the CP 10 week program and went from 280#, roughly, to 450# today. So, over the course of 10 weeks, I increased my DL by 170#. Which is an insane 17# increase per week.
The past 3 weeks were pretty bad. My feet, back, traps, shoulders, everything basically was so sore I couldn't find a comfortable position to sleep properly. So, not only was I tired from the lifts, I was also tired because I couldn't get enough sleep.
But, I forced myself through it. Went from 3 workouts per week, to 1...which was still bad enough.
Now, I have a 450# DL.
Stage 4 is to hit 500#, which I hopefully will do before the end of the year. I have my doubts about that though, as I'm now going on a heavy squat program.
Stage 5 is 550#, stage 6 is 600#.
With time, I hope to hit at least a 650# raw, conventional deadlift, WITHOUT hooks or straps.
I don't even use chalk right now.
While the results are pretty damn impressive, it is not for the faint of heart. Unless you like pain and sore muscles for basically 4 of the 10 weeks that is.
But, the feeling of accomplishment is so worth it.

You're not a man if you don't DL.
So they say at least.
Some people, at least those in the fitness world, say that every single living human being should learn how to DL.
How many people have back problems? The DL can cure a LOT of those problems.
Plus, it will make every day living a hell of a lot easier.

6' - 240#.
Still have some weight to lose. My target is 220#, although with my body type, build and my routine....it'll be tough to lose body fat, and weight at the same time without picking up muscle.

Me and my buddy just started p90x and finished the first week. Good feeling, especially since I haven't been working out lately. This program gets you right back on the horse and gets you working harder than you'd ever get going to the gym.
I'm trying to bulk up and my buddy's trying to shed some pounds, so it'll be interesting to see who experiences more ideal results when it's all said and done.
What I love is how this program kicks your ass, but just by doing so gets you motivated to bring it harder the next day. Anyone still hesistating get out there and try it!

dumb question (and too lazy to google):
if you are suppose to consume 2000 calories a day, and your workouts burn another 1000....are you suppose to consume that extra 1000, making your daily at 3000 calories?
thanks

If you don't want to lose weight, sure.
But, its a bit more complicated than just eating at a deficit in order to lose weight.

i just find that when i burn 1000+ calories after a workout (p90x or cycling)i get REALLY hungry. i tend to eat a lot more after such workouts.
when i rode a century a few months back i burned 5000+ calories...and i remember eating a lot of food that night, yet still hungry.

I believe your average resting metabolic rate allows you to consume about 11 X Your weight to basically "Break Even". This all depends on how active you are as well. This "Break Even" point could be a higher amount of calories the more active you are (As in your working out and burning 1000 calories).
1 Pound is 3500 Calories
The effects wouldn't last long, but if you kept up your same diet for a week and burned an excess of 1000 calories per day, you could possibly lose a good 2 pounds per week, but it would tail off. You can't sustain that.
I get hungry after workouts and runs as well, but the key is to split your meals up into 4-6 a day. I try splitting mine up into 5. Don't just eat 2 big meals and a small meal.

Yeah, well your body is craving calories to repair all the muscle tissue it has to repair after such a workout.
I can eat like a pig after hockey as well.
Personally, I don't really care how many calories I eat. As long as I stay away from carbs with a high GI index.
And, after a workout, I especially don't care about what I eat, so after a hard workout, such as as hockey game, I would often drink up to 4L of chocolate milk.
And still be hungry.

I've been rethinking my whole approach to this nutrition guide. At first I didn't want to eat a lot of food, as my original goal was to drop pounds and just tone up a bit.
I changed my thinking about a week ago and started to eat a lot more. It seems my metabolism has really triggered and now I am eating more and losing more weight.
I do have to confess that I skipped the last week of workouts. I am starting Week 5 all over again tonight, when I should technically be on Week 6. Too many things going on every night, but looking forward to getting my ass totally handed to me tonight.
Azure, nice work on the DL. I've been reading lots about that as well, definitely something i will want to try in the future. Are you doing that at a Gym or at home?

Also meant to add, as long as the food is good clean food, I'm not worrying so much.
Cut the junk out, lower the carbs and make the ones you eat complex ones, you'll be golden.
I'm going to need to get some new Chicken recipes soon though...

At home.
Sure, the weights are a bit expensive. Something like $450 for the 500# I have right now. But, I don't like working out around other people. My own schedule, my own timing. And I don't want to hurry because some idiot wants to use the same station.
About the missed workouts....don't worry about it. Like I said when you first started this, there will be days or weeks when you simply can't get a workout in. This has happened a lot to me over the past year, and my progress never slowed that much.
Over the course of a 80 year period where you can exercise is some way, your body isn't going to punish you for 7 days of that.

That is exactly what I'm doing.
I try to keep carb intake below 200g per day. At least.
So far its working great.

How many calories are you taking in in a day? I'm trying to get at least 4000 a day and I don't know if I could do that if I only took in 200g of carbs per day.

Over 3500. Trying to hit 4000, although it is pretty hard.
Of course the last week has been pretty bad. Some days, I barely got a 1000 per day.
Try to eat more meat, drink more protein shakes, and if that doesn't work, buy some meal replacement shakes that are low in carbs, but high in fat, calories and protein.

See I think this is where I'm coming up short, I'm not eating enough. I've cut out all the junk but I don't eat enough.
If you don't mind Top Self, would you be able to send or explain to me what your eating routine is? Thanks.

Sure I will give you a typical day plan for me.
Breakfast - Usually some combination of Eggs, 4-5 scrambled with cheese and milk. Or 3 fried eggs and two pieces of toast. Usually coffee too
Snack - Mix a low fat yogurt with flax granola, usually two of the small yogurts or one of the bigger ones, with maybe a 1/3 cup of granola
Lunch - Usually try and have some sort of chicken. If i'm organized that morning, I will prepare all the ingredients for a chef's salad and have that. That is probably my ideal lunch, and I make it pretty big too.
Snack - Protein Bar - My wife found these mini Oh Yeah bars at Walmart and they are really good. Only 9g of Fat and 18g of sugar with 14 g of Protein. I really like them, and I don't feel like they are too much like the big ones.
Dinner - This one varies quite a bit, but usually try to have some sort of big salad, some type of meat like steak or chicken. This can be challenging as we do have two kids, so we kind of have to compromise a bit.
Workout - Usually 1.5-2 hours after Dinner
Post Workout - On lifting days, I use Endurox R4 Vanilla. Sometimes I use just water, sometimes i use Chocolate Milk with berries, it kind of depends how drained I am.
One other thing I drink a ton of water all day. I always have though, so that wasn't a big issue for me.
The above is like an ideal day for me. I find I have to keep it varied though, or else I will get sick of eating the food. Like the egg thing, I need to start mixing in some other stuff to my eggs to make it a bit different.
