1-3-1 is not necessarily a trap system. It's just not an aggressive forecheck. The Flames lack team speed and also try and do a lot of line changes, so it's a better system for that.
A trap system tries to dictate the flow of movement in the neutral zone, with wingers staying pretty high near the red line, not backing into the defensive zone, and forcing the puck to the boards. A trap system is not even low event - it tries to create turnovers in the neutral zone.

The Flames utilize a two-man forecheck, with the F3 high, like most teams in the league do.
Not a trap.
The Flames problem is that, when they gain possession of the puck, they are not good at creating plays and getting the puck to the middle of the ice. That is not Huska's fault.

In fact, Huska has been beating a faster transition drum since he took over. But they haven't executed well. Partly because their D wasn't exceptional at passing, partly because their Fs are not good at receiving passes on the fly and partly because generally, they are a slow team. This is all starting to change hopefully. Parekh is a good passer and Kuz and Brzu seem to be pretty good as well. Hopefully team speed will start to increase (it's one reason why I hate to see some of the draft reviews talk about players with poor skating but who make up for it with good hands).

Yeah.
I'm pretty sure Huska's system has more to do with roster construction than anything else.

Except that Huska isn't actually saying that.
Every player gets ice time at both ends of the ice. Huska's expectation is that players will do their best to learn the defensive system and follow it when they are in the defensive zone. When they are in the other zone, they can freewheel as much as they like.
Parekh isn't going to score any points when he's hemmed in his own zone because he and his teammates can't get possession of the puck. That's true under any coach in the world.

Whos the last 19 year old rookie NHL defenseman that had any good success in the NHL?
I am guessing the list is tiny.

18 is different though. 19 comes with its own specific set of challenges. Its not an nhl friendly age.

I haven't validated these stats are right (though I don't know why they wouldn't be), but here is the list of 18 year old NHL dmen:
https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/play...efensemen.html
- The ones that stand out in terms of recent ones are Schaefer, Ekblad, Dahlin, and Hanifin.
And here is the list of 19 year olds:
https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/play...efensemen.html
There's some overlap because the 19 year old list includes those that debuted at 18.
Guys like Myers, Werenski and Fowler are recent examples.
It's pretty rare though, and even more rare to be effective at that age.

Buium just turned 20 as well and he has been fine. Gets lots of minutes.
I think it just takes longer for offensive defensemen to adjust. It is not the end of the world if it takes him a year or 2 more to be ready for the NHL.

So pretty tiny then. Zeev isn't looking so good now that he isn't on a top team now.
Parekh will be just fine.
In fact if you check their possession stats, Parekh at 5v5 was excelling on his limited minutes. Better then Ze'ev.

The list of 18-year-old defencemen who rivalled Bobby Orr in junior scoring is also pretty tiny.

It's also a bit of a different transition coming from the NCAA than from junior.
Parekh would have been fine over the course of the season. I suspect that if he wasn't injured, he'd be getting close to full time duty by the end of the season. That is what happens without a lot of junior eligible prospects that make the jump to the NHL. After missing so much time, they may have to reset the plan here though. Nothing the Flames or Huska were doing was abnormal.
I just can't believe how many people are or were freaking out because a 19 years with no NHL experience wasn't being given top minutes or no development goals in place, like improving in some areas.
It just gets so tiring that everything has to be a crisis or controversy. Eleven games are being extrapolated when they shouldn't be.

That's not actually true at all? He's not putting up points now that he isn't on a top team, but he is probably the team's second best defenseman right now after Hronek.

Both will be fine.
Zeev has been less sheltered for sure, and he's struggling a bit with it but it's expected for a young dman on a bad team.
Parekh has performed fine, not great, in limited and sheltered minutes on a bad team.

Tom Willander has also been exceptional, so this insult isn't what you think it is. The only young guy who really struggled was D-Petey. It's less that "Zeev's been better than bad players" and more "Zeev has performed well in all the situations he has been put it."
