On a team that is very top heavy and has a strong top 9 to generate offense then I think you can support having a player like Lomberg playing 9 minutes a night in a 4th line role.

The Flames don't have an offense that can support having a sub 45% xGF forward that is going to be a black hole from both a possession game and scoring perspective every night.

Especially when he's blocking younger players from getting NHL looks at this point, and his presence means your 4th line can't really play a more offensive identity.

Great guy as the 13th forward, but his name shouldn't be written in the lineup in pen at this point.

He's a funny player because he has some tools. Speedy, gritty, decent forechecker. He seems like he should produce more, and be better defensively.

I do think his defensive zone play tends to be the issue.

If he can get in on the forecheck and get a cycle going he can at least be effective in that way.

But I feel like he really puck watches and stands around a lot in the defensive zone, has issues clearing the puck, and that tends to be why his metrics aren't' the best.

All that to say, no I don't think it's it. I think it's some underlying biases.

So like everyone else? Farabee has been solid.

Newsflash, they are getting demolished anyhow. You think they are defending well? They are doing nothing.

Fair. They are getting there quickly though at this pace, unless this team turns the corner quickly. At this point, they do need to rattle off some wins in a row the stop the bleeding.

You need roughly a point 58.5% to get close to the playoffs from the start of the season 96/164. Flames are at 20% right now with 6% of the season gone 2 / 10.

Over the remainder of the season (154 points), they now need to play at a 61% point percentage for the rest of the season (94 / 154).

If they go 3-9 by end of October then they need go at a 64.3% point percentage for the rest of the season (6 / 140). Very quickly the team will need to start earning points at a level of a division playoff team as opposed to a wild card team. It's not impossible but it does require a very stead streak of earning points.

Flames division is also looking kinda crap so far

LA?
Van?
Seattle?

You are also assuming two more wins this month like its a fact when every game has been close in the third

Thanks man, I totally didn’t realize lol. I don’t think any coaching style will make much of a difference towards winning. Team will have to start gutting out wins again.

12th in xGA60 five on five and 28th in 5 on 5 save percentage.

They've been decent defensively for sure.

Two potential reasons for that:

1) the coach doesn't want him to
2) since the injury, he is hesitant

Which of those two is more plausible?
3) Pro athletes sometimes get lazy and complacent after they’ve signed a contract that ensures they’ll be rich for the rest of their life.

Yup. This season is gonna be painful to watch, but it’ll be a good thing for the franchise in the long run.

That stat certainly indicates that there could be a turn around. Hopefully, it happens soon.

Hopefully not, I am fully on board with tanking! If we went on a win streak just to come 9th again, that would be the worst result possible.

This year we shouldn't cheer to make the playoffs at the expense of a good draft choice. That's what we did last year and it got us nothing. I'm enjoying watching the young guys and what they bring. Any hope that Huberdeau is the godsend is hopeful at best. If it's true that Rasmus will only sign with Vegas, then based on his play so far this year, it looks like we'll just end up with a middling defense man. It could be a long season.

Losing is never fun but I think it's past due for Flames fans finally take the medicine. The organization has been in the mushy middle for the better part of three decades to the point where fans have been conditioned to accept mediocrity. Rarely ever starting seasons with Stanley Cup ambition because we are just hoping to make the playoffs. I think it's due time to have that really bad season that almost every other organization has had enroute to a top 3 pick. With a new arena on the horizon, now is the time to have a season bad enough where the organization has an opportunity to draft a franchise player. The fans deserve better and I for one am at peace with the Flames having a really bad season.

This is simply something that has to happen or we are going to continue with the miss playoffs for x amount of years straight followed by the odd playoff appearance and early elimination. The team isn't good enough nor is the prospect pipeline. It's our time.

Looking at the schedule and it's tough to Nov 1, then softens up a bit in November, before a hard stretch to end the month.

@ Knights
Jets
Canadiens
@Jets
Rangers
@ Maple Leafs
@ Senators

Then an easier stretch

@Predators
@Flyers (Back to Back with travel)
Blue Jackets
Blackhawks
@Wild
@Blues
Sharks
Jets
@Blackhawks
@Sabres

Then tougher again

Stars
@Canucks (Back to Back with Travel)
@Lightning
@Panthers
@Hurricanes

That's the first 27 games of the Flames season. They likely need to be something like 13-9-5 to be in the playoff hunt (94 point pace).

They are 1-4-0 right now. Which means they need a 12-5-5 stretch here to get back into the race, which is tough with this schedule.

The record for least goals scored in an 82 game schedule is 150 so 1.83 goals per game by the 2013/14 Buffalo Sabres.

At 9 goals in 5 games Flames are on a 1.8 clip or 148 goal pace.

Next worst was Tampa in 97/98 with 151 goals and 1.84 goals per game.

To put it in perspective. Early days of course but on pace for the worst team ever at scoring goals.

For the team tank crew the Sabres finished dead last that year and drafted Sam Reinhart at number two. They must have lost the lottery. Ekblad went first.

Tampa drafted Lecavalier at number 1 in 98.

So there might be a silver lining??
