Only way Potter gets traded is if he's intending to pull a Alan Fux on the Flames. Otherwise I think he's going to be a huge part of the next core. Emphasis on YUGE, trump style.

My concern is the cost to get Byram here. If we're talking Pospisil + something, I think it's fine even though I'm actually a big fan of Pospisil, but I feel he tops out as a physical energy guy perfect for the 3rd line and you're getting more in Byram. If it's Zary + though, I'd be worried that over the long term, Zary will bring more. Prior to his injuries, Zary was one of the few bright spots for the Flames, maybe the brightest with his speed, creativity and hands and I think he'll be that player again this season and continue to develop if his injuries are behind him.

you don't trade a player you drafted two minutes ago. This isn't the NBA.
still think a three way where we give up Ras and end up with Byram makes the most sense unless Conroy decides to move Zary (I hope he doesn't). Complicated to get done, but I do feel like a CGY/BUF/VGK three way could benefit everyone involved.

I personally just don't want to give up value assets for a player I see as overrated.

What are his contract demands anyway?

From CGY?
Last I heard the rumour was 7x8.5 from CGY
I think Craig and camp were more like 5x6.25
They were more than 2M apart AAV and term was different.
AKA overpay me to stay otherwise I’ll explore UFA which is my preference anyhow.
**Referring to Rasmus which might not be the right player^

Sounds pretty similar to Lindy’s position.

Yeah, I meant for Byram. Because that is the other part of this. You give up a haul in a trade, but then you still have to sign the guy.

With where the cap is going, that’s not really overpaying imo. I think the Flames offer is in low ball territory, and I think it’s like that on purpose. The Flames see where they’re at, there’s not much point signing another older D man when they already have Weegar. If he accepts a low contract with decent term like that, fine. But that contract offer tells me, their preference is to trade him.

Based on the Provorov contract it sounds like Rasmus has a pretty good idea what his market value is.

I think he cannot be relied on as the “go-to” guy. He relied heavily on Dahlin.
Weegar is the de facto go-to guy and also Parekh *should* be down the road. I think Byram is a good #2 and just needs the opportunity to do so.

I think Byram comes in around 6x6.5+
K’Andre Miller just butchered the market sadly.

The stuff I read from Buffalo fans suggests he has his share of WTF moments and doesn't check well.
Even though I am not a fan, I will say that a lot of defensemen don't really come into their own later in the 20s. He still has a lot of runway to reach his potential and improve. I just wouldn't want to give up a lot for the type of risk he carries. Not for a defenseman anyway.

If the cost to acquire him is reasonable the cap hit does not really matter to the Flames right now (as in they are in no risk of going over the cap).

Here's what I know Buffalo has kept an eye on from Calgary.
Rasmus - Obviously, but he's already said he wont extend there.
Pospisil - They really love his size and snarl and the fact he can play up and down the lineup.
Zary - Lots of teams are curious what Calgary is doing with Zary/Frost
Mews - Buffalo apparently had him quite high on their draft list, could see him used as a D for D swap + a roster player
|
I think Byram is overrated here, and no way would I include Zary. But I would do Farabee and Mews

Asked my brother in law about Byram because his cousin coached him for 5-6 years. "Amazing kid he says. Would love to have him here. "
So take that in contrast to the negative things that have been said about him.
