Gareth Southgate has been rewarded for transforming the fortunes and culture of the England football team with a knighthood in the new year honours list.
The 54-year-old led England to consecutive European Championship runners-up finishes and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals during his eight years in charge, before stepping down after the 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Sir Gareth becomes only the fourth former England manager to receive a knighthood, after Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Walter Winterbottom and Sir Bobby Robson.

Barcelona could lose Dani Olmo for the second half of the season after LaLiga said the Catalan club are not in a position to extend the Spain international's registration ahead of Tuesday's deadline.
Olmo, 26, joined Barça in the summer and was granted a temporary registration until Dec. 31, giving Barça time to comply with the league's financial fair play rules and prolong his registration until the summer.
However, the deadline is set to pass without Barça offering LaLiga sufficient guarantees that they are now able to fulfil the regulations.
"As of Dec. 31, Barcelona have not presented any alternative, in accordance with LaLiga's economic rules, that allow the registration of players from Jan.2," the league said in a statement.
Isn't Olmo able to leave on a free if he wants? That to me sounds like the agent did a great job protecting the player and if Olmo wants to wait for all this to resolve with appeals that is the player's choice

I genuinely dont know.
The thing for me is...when you sign a player you have to meet the Club's Transfer Price, then you have to meet the Player's personal terms, and in Spain you have to be able to financially register the player.
Okay, apparently Barcelona got some lee-way there...no way! Right? When does Barca ever catch a bureaucratic break??
But they pushed it as long as they could. Now...can Olmo leave? Maybe, I really dont know.
The real question is...whether he can be registered to play or not...I presume that Barca still have to pay him? He has a contract. It seems to me that the fact that he cant play is Barca's problem, not Olmo's. Is that strictly accurate? Again, I dont know. The Spanish Football and contract system is a bit of an oddity to me.
But as far as I can tell, seemingly, Olmo has done nothing wrong, this is all on Barca.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Laporta is such a clown. Somehow, some fans still lap it up when he whines about the league being soooo unfair to them, but the truth is the club has just not been operating in a financially sensible way for years now. Granted, he's inherited an absolute mess from Bartomeu, but he has done absolutely nothing to stabilize the club's finances, on the contrary. The correct play would have been to not make expensive signings for a couple of years and just focus on developing La Masia talents. Heck, if there's one club in the world that can easily live off their own youth talents for a while in order to recover financially, it's Barcelona ... they would have easily still qualified for CL, no problem. But nooooo, Senor Levers had to go and sign expensive players, so he started selling off future rights to somehow make it work. Now he whines because the league actually somewhat digs its heels in (they'll give in eventually, they always do). Pathetic.
The real headscratcher here is that players like Olmo will still bend over backwards to play for them. I get it, super beautiful city and everything, but it's not exactly a secret that the club itself is a hot mess. I mean, they sign players to expensive contracts and beg them for pay cuts a year later. Mess of a club.

I thought the same thing. And frankly, Barca might be one of the first of the big clubs to go insolvent.
Mortgaging their future TV rights for 'right now' was a terrible decision that is easily and predictably going to come back and bite them in the ass.
They should be pumping kids through La Masia and if they cant hack it, sell them to balance the books.

Swedish football manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, the first foreign coach to lead the England national team, died with debts of over £3.8 million ($4.64 million) following years of financial mismanagement.
Eriksson, who died in August last year at the age of 76 having earlier announced that he was terminally ill with pancreatic cancer, left assets worth £4.8m but owed £8.64m.
Dortmund losing 4-2 to Holstein Kiel ... that should be curtains for Nuri Sahin. They have been shocking pretty much all season.
and another loss. Thing is, you can sack a manager, but that won't change things if the fish rots from the head down. Watzke, Kehl and Sammer should all go, but won't.

They have no ambition as a club. Klopp elevated them to levels that they were not comfortable with and have been dealing with outside expectations that are beyond what they want to have
On Friday morning in some areas of Paris, you could already see some PSG shirts with his name on it. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's move to the French capital from Napoli hadn't yet been made official, yet some of the fans could not wait. The thirteen letters of his name, the number 7 and their new hero was already appearing on their jersey.
Turkish side Besiktas have appointed former Manchester United player and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjĉr as head coach, the club has confirmed.
"We believe Ole Gunnar Solskjĉr will make significant contributions to our club, and we warmly welcome him to the Besiktas family, wishing him great success," a Besiktas statement said.
