If the Flames want to offer sheet they should go Mercer, Byfield, Perfetti or Robertson.

It would be ideal if the Flames had their third because that is what you should offer sheet Holloway at. A one year 2.28 million dollar offer would be perfect for him, give up a third and call it a day. For 2nd round compensation your targets do make sense except Robertson (he sucks at hockey and is definitely not worth a 2nd) but the ideal place to hunt is with the third round pick, tough for a team to match in certain situations (like the Oilers) and almost a guarantee improvement on what you are giving up. There should be teams willing to give up a third round pick for either Broberg or Holloway just based on value.

Robertson is twelve days older. Mercer, Perfetti, and Byfield are younger.

Now, this is interesting. Robertson sucks, does he? Roughly the same age as Holloway, almost identical ice time / game (Holloway averaged precisely one second less), similar situation (young player trying to break into a deep forward group). Despite Holloway having a significant physical advantage, Robertson scored at exactly double the rate (0.48PPG vs 0.24PPG) with similar team-relative underlying numbers (Holloway's a little better). So, at best, Holloway is equivalent to Robertson.
Would any of you Holloway boosters give up a second rounder--an early second, no less--for Nick Robertson?

I don't get why we are talking Halloway and not Broberg? Broberg is worth a legit long term offer i think at this point.
Do what sharks did to chicago years ago where they offer sheeted Hjarmalsson which made Niemi available. Offer Dylan something that Oilers match but is a little uncomfortable and then offer sheet Broberg.

Now I know you're definitely trolling. Matt Coronato had double the amount of points that Dylan Holloway did in his first AHL season. And over a point per game.
Dylan Holloway has never been over a point per game in the AHL.
Even in Coronato's NHL games, he had the same amount of points (9) in 4 less games. And Coronato's younger.

Meh, Coronato is tiny and plays soft in the NHL, even softer in the playoffs I'd imagine. You'd seriously take Coronato over Holloway on your team? Not me!

Too much of a gamble to assume a pick will work out when compared to a 22 year playoff vet

Yes. And it's probably a good thing you aren't the one calling the shots if you don't.

Holloway is a guy but he's nowhere near worthy of an offer sheet or supplanting a prospect like Coronato. He's already played chunks of 2 pro seasons and showed no improvement (see many typical Oiler draft picks). His value is near nill in my books given his numbers over 2 seasons are woeful (I will say the same of Coronato if this season looks the same).
Coronato is a year younger and wasn't really given a big opportunity with the Flames last year despite eventually playing ~35 games. He's far more likely to bust out than Holloway at this point. I'd take him and his work ethic, IQ, great shot in a heartbeat. Why not argue to sign UFA Roslovic to a 1 year deal if you want to add a body with some upside? He won't cost you assets that are probably going to be better than the actual player in the end.
This is more a question of would you offer sheet Pelletier at this point if you were another team? I doubt anyone would bother and that's more along the line of a Holloway comparison. At least Pelletier has injury excuses to fall back on. Holloway just has the onus of being another in a woefully long line of crappy Oilers prospects that turn into busts.

So you do. I was having a hard time finding that rule. The language is buried deep in the CBA. Most sites that claim to explain offer sheets don't even mention it, because they are apparently aimed at people who have never seen ice outside of a drink and can't spot the hockeyball on TV.
