Well this is just the best news of the trade deadline day. Lots of things need to fall into place, but having a 2026 unprotected first now in the coffers is fantastic.

I know the draft is in Vegas but in terms of asset management, they should’ve traded their 2024 first rounder instead of their 2025

Forgive me, but what are the things that need to fall in place for the Flames to get the unprotected 2026 1st round pick?

Nothing needs to fall in place, the Flames have an unprotected 2026 1st from Vegas.

none. A lot of things need to fall in place for the "unprotected" part to be relevant, meaning Vegas has to be terribad in two years.

It was confusing how I phrased it.
I was referring to what needs to happen now for that pick to have high value. Basically Vegas sucking that year.

Hertl is a very good player. I'm curious to see if/how he rebounds playing with better linemates. Particularly on defence, SJ doesn't have a single decent puck moving dman.
As for the Flames pick implication, I love this trade. I have nothing against Vegas, but this pick will make them very fun to root against. They can all the success they want this year and next. Long years. Limited offseasons. Then fall apart in 2025-26.
As Flames fans, I think we all know how much things can change in 2 years.

Thanks everyone for clarifying and this is awesome news that the Flames are adding an additional 1st in 2026.
And yes, Vegas seriously added here. When they get everyone back, they'll be tough to beat, but as always, it depends on momentum at the time when the playoffs hit.

This year anyway, Hertl is a perfect Vegas player? Why you ask? Because he's scheduled to return to action right as the POs start.

It would be pretty funny if the Knights have a top 5 pick in 25 and 26

From a sharks fan point of view, this is heart breaking. Beloved player. What's the point of going to a game this year or next year? Doesn't help that it's my kid's fave player and just got a jersey. Dang.
Edit: and giving up two 3rds to get rid of Hertl. Just shocking stuff from Grier.

So conflicted.
I want Vegas to get their #### together so they can block our rivals from getting anywhere near the finals.
At the same time the door is more ajar for the flames now with Vegas plummeting.

They have to retain for 6 yrs for basically a couple low 1st while giving up 2 high 3rd.
Hertl is 30, he can still play at high level for awhile.
6.75m/ yr for him is a steal for Vegas

Sometimes it is better to not make a bad trade than gut your fan base.
