So, the Flames got a 2nd round pick and a prospect who is a recent 2nd round pick, plus a slight chance at another pick. Not a bad return in my mind. I'm just happy that Conroy is sticking with his long-term view. In my mind, this is great.

I mean... Why would 30 games of a defenseman before his contract expires be worth more than a 2nd round pick and a recently drafted prospect.

In this case there’s at least a 65% chance we got nothing anyways with that return. A late 2nd, a late 3rd in a future draft and a completely unproven former second round pick don’t have the greatest odds of even producing an NHL regular.

So yeah, you could do nothing and possibly have the exact same outcome on the ice except you establish a reputation

Grushnikov halfway decent? Looks like no one was going to buck up a 1st.
I just like that the Flames retained

Part of the problem remains that last year when the market was really hot (and lots of teams in the east especially blew picks for this year) the Flames weren't trying to move these guys for 1.5 playoff runs which gets you the big returns nowadays.

Pure rentals don't pull as much

Ya the idea that we would get a top 20-30 nhl prospect for a rental of a defensive dman is pretty nuts.

So, is everyone assuming this prospect is a bust or doesn't have a high ceiling?

Well cheering for the stars to fulfill pick conditions is WAY easier than Vancouver or Edmonton.

Yep. As per Frank, the pick only transfer if Stars win the cups (6.7% chance). Otherwise nothing.

So the third round pick is practically nothing.

A 1st would have been great, but even if the condition isn't met this is essentially two 2nds. I'm fine with that for a 34 year old pending UFA.

As mentioned, waiting until the last minute could have resulted in a better return but Tanev could also get injured again. He's had a couple nagging shoulder injuries as a Flame and blocks 8 shots a game.

It did feel like things were getting out of hand with the return speculation for a 34 year old defensive Dman. I hoped the 1st would happen but a 2nd, a guy drafted in the 2nd a couple years ago, and another pick seems alright

Scott Wheeler on Grushnikov:

Quote:
10. Artyom Grushnikov, LHD, 20 (Texas Stars)

Grushnikov is a fascinating case study in that despite a statistical profile that virtually never translates to the NHL, he has always had some believers because of his skating, length and ability to defend. He’s got balanced posture and control in his skating, which he uses effectively gapping up. He’s an excellent backward skater. He’s got a disruptive stick and an ability to track and then close out physically (which hasn’t always been part of his game but has developed over time).

He’s got a pro build at 6-1 and a playing weight in the 190s. He has just enough poise and vision with the puck to advance play and occasionally involve himself (he started to activate more late in his junior career, and while that hasn’t continued in his rookie season in the AHL, I do think there are more opportunities for him to use his smooth skating and influence play than he realizes). He has defended well for a 20-year-old rookie in the AHL. Time will tell if his defending is high-end enough to carry him into a No. 6/7 role, but the Stars clearly have belief in him or they wouldn’t have drafted him in the second round, signed him and bypassed the ECHL for the AHL.

Almost no Dmen become impactful players when they can’t put up any offense in juniors, especially in multiple post draft years. Even most defensive style guys that make NHL put up something.

He’s a very low ceiling guy at this point, and would be a 5th or later round pick in a redraft of his draft year.
