No one in this thread argues that Zadorov was the team’s best defenceman. I mentioned him to argue that selling him and Toffoli plus playing rookies plus running a substandard bottom pairing indicated the team is rebuilding or retooling or whatever you want to call it.
The Flames didn’t trade Zadorov because they thought they’d play better as a team without him.

sure, and I agree
this was an ongoing debate
some posters thought they would miss Zadorov a lot, I did not and don't think they have. Obviously when Gilbert goes down now too you are going to have a serious depth problem.
but that is all Zadorov is, depth
IMO and I can't stress this enough IMO

Even the casuals can see you're losing to a #### team.
The whole "sell playoff hope until we trade our guys, then keep selling playoff hope" approach is rather pathetic. There's an air of desperation to it and it also makes the team come off delusional and sets them up to be a laughing stock with fans and behind closed doors.
I'm no fan of the Rangers, but when they put out that open letter to the fanbase to announce their intention to rebuild, they had my respect for making that move. Shows intellectual honesty and a willingness to admit where they were and that they weren't going to settle but accept the pain of the moves necessary to improve long term. But most of all, that they weren't going to BS their fans into false delusions.
I wish the Flames had the stones to do the same. Instead, they're going about it the prolonged, cowardly way, which is rightfully opening them up to criticism.
They could save face with these losses if they'd formally announced a rebuild. Whose going to #### on a team that's labeled themselves as rebuilding? No one.
But since the Flames are so called "playoff hopefuls!" according to their own brass, they're going to get #### on for losses like this to an AHL squad.

All this from the Maloney interview?
Sorry but you have to be leaning into wanting to be upset to get to this point.

This team is a disaster. And so is the owner.

Are people really taking that Maloney interview seriously?
He's not going to come right out and tell everyone their plans. That would be pretty dumb. They're sellers. He knows it, we know it. Doesn't matter what he says.

You have radar on everytime I post so...if you've had enough stop responding
I knew no matter what happened
if they won or stayed the same it would be because of something else
had they lost 10 in a row it would be "you see they miss Zadorov"
Zadorov is an average NHLer depth dman, nothing more and nothing less
thank the maker they didn't sign him long term and we will take the picks

Their record without Zadorov would then be better than with him.
And that point would still remain meaningless as you continue to try and argue that everyone else is fixated on Zadorov.

You post 1100 times a day, you're hard to miss!
I'm not selling Zadorov as a key missing piece. I never have.
I only going as far as to suggest the team has to be weaker with him gone and his substandard replacements in place.
That's it.

I just don't understand why come out and say anything at all then.
It's not like they're forced into those interviews. They did it intentionally.
The messaging isn't consistent with what most Fans believe they should do. Infact it trends the opposite way.
It seems like a misguided attempt to calm fan worries.
The team lost two playoffs last year, signed the worst contract in the NHL, missed playoffs last year and are trending to miss playoffs again hovering around .500 at the bottom of the wildcard pact.
Fans don't want to hear about how you want to keep all these guys.

Maloney isn't some great public speaker and chances are this wasn't something he was all that prepared for. I really don't believe there was much of an intentional message being delivered at all.

Francis didn't go on the road trip so they have 5 minutes to fill every game and with that we've seen every colour commentator in the business interviewed.
So they ask Maloney, and he doesn't want to do a "we suck!" interview and says stuff.
Honestly nothing to see here.

I actually think it's for the trade market more
Flames don't like that since the offseason the narrative has been "These players want out, Flames have to move them" because it limits their flexibility and negotiating power.
The whole "we might re-sign these players", and "we might keep them if we're close enough to the playoffs" narrative IMO is to try to enhance the Flames negotiating position.
Allows the Flames to feel like maybe they hold more of the cards, whether that will work or not remains to be seen. For Lindholm his play has been poor enough that it's out the window...but for Tanev/Hanifin there is still enough uncertainty to think "maybe the Flames do want to re-sign them still" that I think it's being used as part of negotiation tactics.
Especially for Hanifin specifically who maybe has a smaller list of places he is open to re-signing in, with Calgary being on that list.

Maloney's comments were platitudes, nothing more.
If you were actually thinking about signing your UFAs, you say "our first priority is to sign these guys, if possible"
When you aren't planning on signing them, you say "we'd love to be able to sign everyone, but we can't"
That's as negative of a statement as you will ever get from a team president, in a casual interview

Hanifin is 20% singed 80% traded (either is a good result)
the rest are 95% traded 5% incase of injury or something
people need to relax, the Flames aren't about to sign everyone and trade their first for Duclair

I said massive?
Sure don't remember that.
Had a quick look and couldn't find it, but could have been worded differently with the same intent.
