Hey scorp. I'm going down to golf next month. Should I go to a game? Is it expensive?

(The Thrashers' move to Winnipeg isn't really an exception. Nobody was going to pay $500 million or more to put a team in Winnipeg, so the owners didn't mind stashing an otherwise unwanted team there.)

The Winnipeg situation was unique in the sense that TNSE was ready to buy the Coyotes to move them back until an 11th hour deal from the city of Glendale to keep them there (when it looked like things were falling apart during the Hulsizer and parking rights debacle). If that council vote had gone the other way and the Coyotes moved back to Winnipeg, the league would have found themselves in a pretty ####ed situation the next summer when the Thrashers situation would come to a head.
The situation became dire when the Thrashers were basically being kicked out of their arena with no landing spot and TNSE was able to buy them with a relatively paltry relocation fee (the $60M brought the total up to $170M, which was the reported amount they were going to have bought the Coyotes for, so the league still 'got their cut').

Rare opportunity to see an NHL team can an AHL team in and AHL rink…

It's a lot of fun, I'd recommend it. The Coyotes look half-decent this year, too.

I don’t recall seeing this reported before “They have also set a midseason deadline for the Coyotes to finalize plans for a new arena.” They appears to refer to the NHL in this article.
https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2023/...-arena-search/
Seems the end is near. Can these jokers put together an arena deal in 2 months?

If the Coyotes are actually good and if they made the third or fourth round, the NHL would really be hooped. I wonder what they'd even do? You can't even get more than one broadcast truck in there. Visiting team TV crews call the game remotely via a world feed.
That tells me that the NHL might actually be serious with this mid-season deadline. It can't go on for much longer because eventually the Coyotes will make the playoffs and advance in them if you play the odds over multiple seasons. It's a scenario that would be a colossal embarrassment.

^ I don't think that's true. I saw the Flames' broadcasters at the rink when I was down there last year.

Winnipeg 's attendance tonight was just over 11,000 and they didn't sellout their home opener. If that's what happens in a Canadian market with a pretty good team I don't think we can make judgments about Phoenix as a market.

There are 200+ posts in this thread alone that are making those exact judgements.

Sportsnet definitely sent their usual crew down there. Dunno how the logistics were different, but the broadcast itself was roughly the same as always.

Unfair because there's so much more to do in Winnipeg.

Its been a farce for some time.
It would be interesting to know some of the conversations being had behind closed doors between the owners though.
Look, I dont care. The Coyotes are playing in a College arena, and...I mean they've been a joke for a long time now. I dont pretend to know what the League's Endgame is supposed to be.
And I dont have a problem with a team in Arizona other than it keeps running out of money, being sold to crooks and idiots in between stints on League stewardship.
Its actually quite fascinating from a Business Analysis perspective.
But I also understand that Arizona are being heavily subsidized by the rest of the League's ticket sales and theres a limit as to how long those owners are going to put up with that.

Well that doesn’t make any sense. Both cities struggle, and it has nothing to do with the larger countries they are a part of.

Attendance is down everywhere but I already knew this was going to become a big talking point for people that didn't want to team back in Winnipeg. Buffalo had 12,000 people last night and have yet to hear anything about that. There were entire rows completely empty for the Flames home opener. I remember back when I used to go all the time to flames games in the 2000s after the cup run. It was difficult to buy TICKETS for oilers or Canuck games, or the home opener. Everything is cyclical, and instead of banking the goodwill of the Canadian fan bases owners squeeze them by their balls. I've been reading that alarm bell for years now

Maybe it's no more than two. I know that the MSG broadcast crews don't go there and they cite that as the reason.

Major markets selling tickets for roughly 200$ a pop has a large part to play when considering the amount of people they can jam into the arenas.
If you lower the average ticket price in any Canadian/bigger market I wouldn't be surprised to see the attendance numbers spike.
At some point in time ticket prices skyrocketed and it made being a fan overly expensive.

Caps shut out streak broke yesterday or day before after a few hundred games. Last year it was the penguins streak broke.
Sharks last night apparently had 10k people at the game. Buffalo 11k.
The NHL has made going to games unaffordable and squeezed their fans across the aboard. The chickens are coming home to roost , or whatever the saying goes.
