Still feels like there’s one more move coming.

If Kadri is in fact going to the islanders it would be cool to pick up Stastny on a short term contract for center depth. Still think he’s an upgrade over Monahan.

We have a surplus of D as well. Trade for a right winger?

No, I really do get that, but every player has a ceiling (especially as an RFA). Once you get up to the $6.5M AAV this player starts to lose his comparable market in a hurry and I can't see his camp being fully delusional to that fact.

The team is staring down potentially signing Huberdeau and Weegar long term and a guy like Mangiapane is pretty important to have around if you are putting a contender together. He's certainly affordable at a higher AAV given he might be one of the most important players on the roster outside of the obvious.

Cool, glad to have Mang another 3 years. Im not really concerned about the term as I don’t really think there will be much of an issue re-signing at that point.

I highly doubt the Flames were looking at a 6.8M cap hit on a 4 or 5 year deal for the player.
if I were him I would have asked for at least 6.75M - 7M to buy more years. Otherwise I'll bet on myself and line up to cash in again for one more deal. I would be doing the math of what I think I could earn in 3 years, including recognizing that the cap will start to grow by then. Doing that math I probably want to be in the high 6s for sure.

Logically if the Flames could have inked him for 4 or 5 years at 6-6.25 they would have probably made that deal.
I think that's what people are saying - that the fact they went short-term probably means there wasn't common ground for a long-term deal.

It's bizarre that you always have to spin that the team's hands were tied or that we can't talk about something because we don't know for sure.

If the team wanted to push for a long term deal they could have and it certainly wouldn't have priced the player out given the cap hit they landed on for this deal.
How do you know the team didn't push for a long term deal? Because they didn't get one done?

Every dollar saved for next year is one that can go to Huberdeau/Weegar/someone else.

There's game winning goals, then there's goals like that.

Ok, this makes sense, and abides by our "no one is allowed to make more than the obvious leader of the team, Sean Monahan" rule.

What is the theory for how the Islanders are going to fit Kadri into their cap situation?

Assuming they don't have try to squeeze Romanov (who they just traded the 13th overall pick for), between him and Dobson - they won't have much if any cap space left.

Everyone would prefer a longer term deal at a similar or slightly higher value ... including Treliving.

It's not spin to point out that the team didn't think the longer term options were more desirable or they would have signed said longer deal.

Seravalli said today that his guess would be that Beauvillier is the one they probably move out.

People forget goal scorers have a tougher time scoring with a wrist injury.

Definitely would have preferred this one come in with a much longer term. I think Mangiapane is a good player to 'gamble on'. I wonder what a 6-8 year term would have come in at. I mean, if his agent was asking 9 for that, then yeah, this is a great deal in retrospect. However, at 7 or 7.5, I would think about it. I guess it all depends on how much you believe in Mangiapane.

Kylington's deal I think was fair - just not enough of a track record to bet on him at this stage. Mangiapane has been tracking well for a few years already.

If I was Mangiapane I think you only agree to either 3 years (or less) or 8 years.

3 years has you expire at 29 years old - which sets you up for another contract.

But if he was looking at Klingberg or Kadri right now I doubt you are looking at a deal in the 4-6 year range that would be expiring at 30-32 years old which makes another big contract tough.

So if I'm Mangiapane I'm going "I'll take the 3 x $5.8M, or something like 8 years x $6.5-7.0M"

I could see why Flames might want to take the shorter option here too.

If you can do Brad's zipper up let's get a real evaluation. Praise the guy when he deserves it, criticize him when he deserves it.

Its a good contract...he wasn't signing under 6 for 7 or 8 years and giving the guy 7 or 8M is way too much risk
some of you don't seem to understand their are two sides in a negotiation

Do you honestly think he was willing to sign a 6-8 year deal in this ballpark and Brad was like "nah"

I bet this is one of the best contracts in the NHL the next 3 years...so yeah credit where credit is due

Both of these contracts are very good, kudos to Treliving. I've been critical of some of his moves but I respect that he is avoiding stupid long term deals, good work Brad.
