Have a look at ice times when Gio was on the team with Tanev. I suspect the top 4 were more heavily weighted.
Sutter Coached the final 30 games in 20-21 and really it's tough to compare because he mixed the pairings up a lot more.

6 pairings played over 100 minutes down the stretch - no pairing averaged more than 11 minutes per game (Tanev-Hanifin at 10:58 per game).

Sutter really didn't trust any of Nesterov, Stone, or Valimaki down the stretch that year IMO and was mixing up pairings to try to protect them.

What I recall is that he finally paired Tanev with Gio and it salvaged Gio’s season. But if you were going to make comparisons, Gio is the most like Weegar.

Tanev-Weegar
Hanifin-Andersson
Zadorov-Kylington

Dube is going to take a step this season and develop some chemistry with Kadri, with Mang as their trigger man. I like both Dube and Kadri's puck carrying abilities with speed.

He has to be geared up.

His camp last year was so under the radar. Didn't stand out at all. He even referenced it himself.

Last year he was not ready. I thought he didn't look strong enough for starters. That said, he has a legit shot at a roster spot if we comes into camp like a bull out the gate.

Which other forward prospect competing for a roster spot this year? Ruzicka, Phillips, Pelletier? Maybe Deuher walker for a 4th line grinder type roll?

Sometimes I wonder if the Flames put too much weight on training camp / pre-season and not enough weight on the previous track record and overall skill set.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Zary has a great camp.

You may have a track record and a skill set, but a part of what you're being tested for is your ability to bring it on command. Pre-season is a prospects Stanley Cup Game 7. If you have an off day during the most important game of your career, than how reliable of a player are you? One of the biggest leaps between the AHL and NHL is consistency, not just game to game, but shift to shift.

I do not like these forward lines in the least. Lindholm should not be back on the wing and I have no idea why Ruzicka is centering Huberdeau and Toffoli?

If no other adds I hope Pelletier or Philips make their way on the third line but with the team finally having center depth I do not see any reason to push out top center to the wing

One does not simply move one of the best 2-way centres in the game back to RW.

Close.
I'd prefer splitting up our 2 right shot top 6 forwards though; Eat Bread brings some dynamic nature to the 1st line, with Teapot adding some finishing to the 2nd.
Weegar on left side.
Rooney gets inked in centre often but he has a putrid faceoff win%, hence prefer him on the wing.

Huberdeau-Lindholm-Mangiapane

Pelletier-Backlund-Coleman
Lucic/Rooney-Ruzicka-Lewis

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Toffoli

Pelletier - Backlund - Dube
Lucic - Ruzicka - Rooney

Hanifin - Andersson
Weagar - Tanev
Kylington - Zadorov

Markstrom

I don't love the idea of coleman on the second line, I think he's better suited with Backlund - but I think he should be given an opportunity in a more offensive role at least to start the season with Kadri and Mangi. He was very effective in Tampa with offensive players on his line.

In a perfect world though, I'm hoping Tre still makes a trade sending Valimaki and another prospect for a RW option to play in the Top 9. Can't wait to see how different the lines look on night one of the regular season though, Daryl must be thrilled with the depth he's been given especially on Defense and Center.

Huberdeau (trade)-Lindholm (trade)- Toffoli (trade)
Mangiapane (draft)-Kadri (UFA)- Coleman (UFA)
Pelletier (draft)- Backlund (draft)- Dube (draft)
Lucic (trade)- Rooney (ufa)- Lewis (ufa)

Hanifin (trade)- Anderson (draft)
Weegar (trade)-Tanev (ufa)
Zadorov (trade)- Kylington (draft)

Markstrom (ufa)
Vladar (trade)

I think there is a good chance Pelletier is bumped for another UFA or trade acquisition. The last couple of years the flames have lost some key drafted players (Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Monahan, Bennett, Brodie and Gio was a ufa prospect developed like a draft pick)
Treliving has used trades and free agency for many of the key positions as he has completely retooled the rebuild he started.

Of the 20 man roster

8 via trade
6 via free agency
6 via draft

I have no idea how it would work, but at some point this season I really want to see a

Huberdeau - Dube - Mangiapane

I think that line has the potential to be extremely fun to watch. That said, I don't see how it could work unless Lindholm is moved to Kadri's wing, which seems to be counter productive. I just see Dube as a guy that would compliment Huberdeau extremely well and gain confidence as the season goes on.

I think you only see this if Lindholm, Kadri... and probably Backlund are injured. And in that case likely heaven help usz lines probably don't matter.

I’m so looking forward to a season of not debating if our star forwards really want to be here or not. From an outsider’s perspective it’s hard not to question if that was a factor at times in team performance.

Because of what Huberdeau can do for others on his line I'd almost like to try Coleman up there. He's such a tenacious, hard working player, maybe he could be a 30 goal guy with Huberdeau.

Hockey Analyst: Flames have one of the best 1-2-3 punch down the center with Lindholm, Kadri and Backlund
