I feel like almost all players would have a list that looks like this:
1. Edmonton
2. Calgary
3. Winnipeg
4. Ottawa
5. Minnesota
6. Columbus
7. Buffalo
8. Maybe Islanders/Devils/Detroit?

I'd expect most players will have Arizona on their lists until they move into their new arena.

This is a key part of it. It comes down to this and a constructive discussion.
We traded for you because we really want you here long term. It is important to work with you and your agent to get a long term extension in place before the start of the season. Let’s work towards a contract that reflects the success you’ve had and your value. From our standpoint with what has happened over the last couple of weeks, this is very important to the organization. If we can’t get a deal done, we won’t have certainty throughout the season and will always be assessing our options instead of focusing on the goal of being successful and making a deep playoff run.
I think at some point we need to acknowledge not only the players value and needs but that getting extensions done timely (early?) is a business need. There should be a clear acknowledgment of that and deadlines set with your players that allow you to avoid what just happened.

Unfortunately, we couldn't fit in Marner for cap reasons, unless we include Monny in that trade. Maybe throw in a 7th round draft pick too.

Valimaki would be a sweetener in a trade for Marner, lol.

Sub in Arizona or Seattle if he doesn't want to be on building teams. We probably just missed the cut.

Why are the Leafs trading a top line NHLer for a borderline prospect?

Players have different lists. Calgary is not considered as bad a place as many make it out to be.

Players can update their list every season

Agents often analyze the market and advise players to put the teams most likely to trade for them on their no trade lists.
Possible they weren't expecting Calgary to land him.

Why did Bill Zito trade Huberdeau for Tkachuk? Then add in Weegar, prospect and a 1st?
Brad's on a roll, let it ride haha.
EDIT: Ok people, do you honestly think I was serious we could trade a tweener for a superstar? Jeez, chill.

Zito got a young superstar locked up for 8 years, for two pending UFAs.
I like the deal for the Flames, but Florida got the most valuable piece.

I'll be biased with my list and leave Calgary off of it. My 5 cities would look like
1. Edmonton
2. Winnipeg
3. Toronto
4. Philadelphia
5. Buffalo

Lol.
Calgary will never attract the NYC loving crowd, and a lot of players who've gone through the US development/NCAA system are going to have strong ties to their hometown American regions.
That being said, a lot of hockey players also come from rural communities in Canada. They like outdoors and ranch-type activities. A lot of players will like the proximity to the mountains and the ability to own a ranch with animals, that is a small distance from the arena.
Not everyone is going to have the same list.

We will see...do you think this trade improved the Panthers, because I don't

Meh... I mean yes we have to many D-men... but the surplus is mostly guys that we can shuttle between Calgary and... well Calgary... between the Flames and the Heat. Gilbert, McKey, Meloche... guys like that. If Weegar extends we have so many more options on what we can do (because regardless of the number of bodies we're overcommitting money on the bottom pairing right now).
