Okay. Almost nobody, including the post you quoted, has said they thought it was funny. It’s completely irrelevant to the conversation the second Smith jumped on stage.

To further on Yamer's hockey analogy, I've been in that situation - I once tried to get a guy to leave a group with a light push on the shoulder, wouldn't even qualify as a shove, in a context where that would normally just be interpreted as totally harmless and laughed off. He'd hit me twice before I realized what was even going on. I basically just noped, didn't even have the wherewithal to get my bearings to fight back. No one did anything but look shocked and he walked out totally unmolested, because everyone else was just as surprised as I was.

The fact this most unequal, entitled, narcissistic industry on the planet feels it’s their job the lecture the rest of us on public morality is nauseating.
Well, I can totally understand everyone having no idea what to do when this totally unexpected behaviour happened in this setting - do we screw up our TV show by having the guy hauled off? Well, he seems to have calmed down now and is back to his seat... do we talk about it? Do we just go on with the show? There's millions of people watching. What the hell just happened?

So yeah... I get not hauling him away. It's the reaction to the speech that's the epitome of what people hate about celebrities.

This dude tries to justify his embarrassing outburst by crying, trying to cast himself as a victim, declaring himself to be a God-given "vessel for love" in the most self-aggrandizing, tone-deaf way, completely gaslighting everyone about him being a "protector" and "all about family" rather than just a spoiled child who can't handle his emotions, and... it WORKS for this audience? His millionaire acquaintances just... cheer and applaud endlessly? He should have been laughed out of the building. It was absurd, but totally expected, because an ego like that is fragile and must be coddled and have its self-certainty in its own amazingness reinforced. Really pretty gross to watch, and the utter lack of any apparent understanding of what it looked like to most of the people watching at home... yeesh.

I won't comment of the Chris Rock thing as it's been done to death, but god the awards were boring.

Not much the awards can do to make them more entertaining. maybe fire the writers as the jokes are mostly lame. just let the presenters wing it.
Maybe cut the mikes of people who start a laundry list of names. thank your spouse and kids and move on.

I cringed when Liza Minnelli was on stage. she seemed so out of it that it was sad and embarrassing to see her up there.

Funniest line I think was from Woody Harrelson.
When he said he's been nominated 3 times and this was the most words he's spoken, and presenting is where it's at.

a couple of moments, but overall, I give the show a D
At it's core, it's a dumb ceremony where people of one rich & privileged industry give awards to themselves. If you think about it its no different than some sales seminar where they had out "best salesman of the year" trophies to each other and pat each other on the back (or now slap each other in the face).

At least the Grammy Awards have some live music performances which offer some entertainment value.

To be fair, I thought it was a good joke, GI Jane is such a niche '90s reference I got a good chuckle from that. They need to capitalize on this free publicity and make a sequel before people go back to forgetting that terrible movie existed

But you're completely right, the joke isn't even relevant to the rest of the convo

At their core, aren't all jokes tasteless?

One of Norm's most famous bits is the cancer joke. Has the potential to offend millions who have lost love ones to cancer.

Comedians should have the freedom to make fun of anyone and anything. If the audience loves it, they make money. If they aren't funny, they cease being comedians.

I honestly took it more as “you look pretty bad ass!” sort of joke. Maybe I’m way off on the interpretation given their history.

I asked my wife today how she’d feel if I physically assaulted someone for a rude joke, and obviously she responded that she’d be way more mortified at that response. Also, instead of everyone forgetting about a weak joke, now all anyone can talk about is the fact that Jada has alopecia.

Ha open marriage implies either one of those wackjobs would be able to attract a mate other than each other.

Rock has every right to make the joke, and Smith has every right to take exception to it. You just don't go up and slap the guy for it, that's so childish. Bring it up in your speech, or in the media, but don't throw a temper tantrum

Smith's set an interesting precedent though. You can have sex with his wife, but don't make fun of her hair

My wife follows all this stuff, her and the MIL were watching it last night while I was playing South Park TFBW. Apparently all the Hollywood types are supporting Smith and showing once again how disconnected they are from the general populace and reality, while the comedians are rightfully saying "What the f-ck is wrong with you all?"

No kidding, right? Hollywood is basically another planet at this point.

Silence is violence, Locke.

Actual violence though, that's okay.

If TFBW is anything like the first game, I would not play that in front of anyone, least of all my MIL haha.

It's funny you bring up South Park though, one of my first thoughts on this was wondering what Matt and Trey have to say about it. They hate celebrities more than anyone

Anyone else wake up this morning and go, “well that was a weird dream, Will Smith flat out walked on the stage at the Oscars and slapped Chris Rock”.

Any other venue and Smith gets punted out on his ass.

And then everyone drinks up his drivel like a fine wine.

Academy are such pussies.

One of my favourite Trey and Matt stories is when they showed up to the 2000 Oscars while tripping balls. I'm sure the related South Park is going to be amazing.

They were watching it in the living room, I was using the Xbox in the entertainment room. But my wife thought the game was hilarious.
