I don't think any of this is about replacement, I think it's about potentials down the stretch. Filling in for injuries, filling in for exhaustion, next man up kinda deal.

I think the message in all the rumors is that the Flames are not that thrilled with the thought of bringing Valimaki up. Which sucks.

It is only a random person from the internet with a post on a message board but if there's any truth behind it, it speaks to Monahan still having value around the league as Lindholm is a high quality dman who got a 1st, two 2nds, an 18th overall pick 5 years ago and John Moore in return.

I do doubt this rumour though as Treliving spoke about them being happy with their D group this year and he did consider what happens if they acquired a player that is a Top 6 dman - who goes out?

He's still very relatively inexperienced and young with a lot of room to grow, so there's no reason to be too down on his progression. Hopefully for their sake, those who were maybe super high on Valimaki before and had him pencilled into a bottom pairing role for the year or even more outrageous, a top 4 role (!?!) will temper their expectations going forward for prospects. It was always highly unlikely he'd be in a top 4 role with so little games played and on a Sutter team, that he'd get a chance to learn while on the job in a bottom pair role.

Highly double Anaheim had any interest in Monahan unless it was simply being done for cap reasons and there were some big pieces being added.
