Honestly I think the fact that it was close on the scoreboard is making people think the Flames didn't play well last night, when in all honesty it was really one sided without finish.

They had a 16-2 edge in high danger chances for 89%. That's nuts!

The percentage is boosted by playing a team that doesn't generate a lot of high danger chances but 16 is a big number.

On this 9 game win streak they've only had more than 16 high danger chances and have averaged 11.

Mangiapane and Gaudreau score on empty net chances in the second and they likely win this 5-1 and everyone thinks they're rolling over teams.

Ah yes, the PDO streak that convinced Gulutzan that Bartkowski-Engelland was a competent pair

A very well-earned third star.

Unbelievable team right now, I think if they do decide to add it will be closer to the deadline and they will let this roster run win it for the time being. Being one of the fewer teams who would probably trade for a forward it’s smart to hold off and see if teams get desperate to find a suitor. Amazing team and time to be a Flames fan!!

Big test coming up too against a Winnipeg team that always seems to be a tough contest for us and it’s in the afternoon to boot. Would be another one of the many different ways to win over the streak and I’m excited to see them get going!! Go Flames Go!!!!!

Number one I would think.

Up there with Hudler and Hamrlik.

I would add Glencross and place him fairly high

1. Tanev
2. Hudler
3. Glencross
4. Markstrom
5. Hamrlik

You also have the odd second runs of Tanguay and Jokinen where they were productive but I rank them below that top 5

The nosebleeds are massive. It’s hard to see them from the lower areas of the arena as they are engulfed in shadow and a distinctive stench, but if those are largely empty because people have moved down, it makes a huge difference.

Markstrom will be on the list, I would think. But with 4 1/3 seasons to go he needs to bank more calendar years to be there.

Tanev at less dollars and less term is already making a top five case even if he slides a bit.

Hamrlik was only two years in Calgary too ... which I guess should put him with Tanguay and Jokinen more than Hudler.

Where does Engelland fit in?

Pretty savvy pick up as well as a guy this team was severely lacking with toughness and net front presence.

I think Tanev tops that list, I'm super happy with Markstrom, and getting a top tier goalie in free agency is ... pretty rare.

But Tanev is unbelievable, he just makes a million smart little plays every night, and he works really hard on top of it. He doesn't make it look quite as easy as Lidstrom used to, but nobody is scoring when Tanev is on the ice, that's kinda the long and the short of it.

I think it's difficult to appreciate defensive play, there's no single "right thing to do", no measurement like getting a goal for the forwards. It's like "Oh, yeah, I didn't see that guy fall down and get scored on." A little less tangible.

Gio was more versatile, but Tanev is a better defender, night in night out. And anyone he's paired with jumps in metrics and performance, that's not a fluke.

Probably in that 6-10 range. In a similar vein, Bobby Boughner was a good signing (though perhaps overpaid) for a bad team that desperately needed leadership.
I think the top 5ish are fairly obvious and then you get into the next tier with shorter stints and/or less impactful guys. In that grouping I would include Engelland, Boughner, Tanguay, Jokinen, Dave Gagner, Dave Lowry, Owen Nolan, Brendan Morrison. Probably missing some guys.

You also have Freddie Brathwaite in there somewhere.

I can't find a definitive list of historic UFA signings for the franchise. Would be interesting to see which ones we are missing.

EDIT: Might be a fun off-season activity to rank.

I'm not going to quibble with the order of the list, but Glencross...

You have to consider the 'deliciousness factor' of having almost literally stolen him from the Oilers.

We saved you Scoreface.

Couldn't watch the game last night as we had a dinner party...but followed the 3rd period secretly on my phone (you know...."wife" secrets LOL). Watched the game afterwards - Flames were unlucky not to score more, but this time the goalie WAS actually pretty damn good,, rather than the Flames just blowing their chances over and over. Good learning game. Can we make it 10?

I'd want to throw in a vote for Gelinas somewhere- I remember being at a cabin in Manitoba with grainy radio reception when I heard the news- he had a shorter (but albeit impactful) tenure than some of the others but was signed in the prelockout era where Flames rarely nabbed anyone of note

of course not the conversation we are having but the Flames may have had as good a history as anyone in signing college or undrafted free agents- St Louis, Giordano, Otto, Macoun, Roloson, Patterson etc etc
