We'e like 16 points up on Vegas. Adding Stone doesn't make them better than us.
Winnipeg's not going to do crap unless Laine decides to show up, no matter who they add.
Nashville's a hard one to peg, really, as they already should be better than they have been.
And San Jose has the same biggest concern as we have: goaltending. We were even with them before, and I don't see Nyqvist changing that.

Quit spouting off your paranoid (or trolling) opinions as fact. There is no fact behind those rosters being better than the Flames at this point, or proof they are better positioned for the playoffs.
This Flames team went through a major face lift already going into this season.........and so far it's paid off with them being 1st in the West. SJ, Winnipeg, Vegas and Nashville didn't...............there's also some truth to Tre did a lot more work than the GMs of those teams much earlier in the year..........which I prefer to doing it at the Trade Deadline because deadline day prices are higher, and it gives those teams less time to work through any chemistry issues in the locker room.
It's fair to have an opinion that you now prefer SJ and Vegas to the Flames roster, cool, it may prove to be true. But it's far from a fact, and Tre not doing anything of significance this deadline is far from a "major mistake". He's got a good team already, that he changed significantly in the last 12 months, it's not like he HAD to give the team it's second round of major surgery..........they are in first place after all.

Mark Stone is a hell of a player.. there is no denying that. However we are now talking about a 9.5M dollar player that has a career high of 64 points, and a less than stellar playoff track record with under 0.5 pts/g (albeit very brief).
Brannstrom is a high end talent. He is essentially a year younger than Valimaki and is having an extremely strong rookie season in the AHL.
I am glad we stayed clear at not only the value in which Stone was traded for, but the contract extension as well.

Pack your bags Brodie, you are being traded in the offseason.

Interesting. I guess I don't mind it.
Huge vote of confidence to the guys in the room. No one shipped out, so everyone should be grateful and come to play for one another. They earned their chance to win with Calgary, it's now to down to every last player in the room to contribute.
Nice not having the draft picks further decimated.

The Stanley Cup is rarely won on Trade Deadline day, but often many competitive years are sacrificed chasing it.

Keeping all three young defenseman definitely has me believing a trade at the draft will happen. You'd have to think you want all of them playing next season.

We aren't willing to trade any of the young D. We then need to make room for the young D and free up space for Tkachuk.
I am reading between the lines.

That's a video game trade. Bennett's value is finally being realized, and I feel like his progression is back on track this year. He's our most physical forward, he makes the line he plays on better (he drives the 3rd line more than jankowski and whoever's on the wing).
No point in trading Bennett, he's going to be an important playoff player for a team that lacks much physicality in the forward ranks already.

Point remains. The Flames needed to upgrade the 2nd line RW position to have a legit chance at a long run in the playoffs, IMO . If it was because they didn't want to lose a late 1st round pick for a guy who was a UFA at the end of the season, that's a fail.
The city and fan base has been stuck supporting a franchise whos won 4 playoff series in the last 30 years. Its not like we've been spoiled with success. I think if anything this tells me management doesn't think they are true cup contender this year and probably thinks the young guys need another year of playoff experience before they are willing to trade any significant assets to go on a cup run.
|
So what would you consider an upgrade on the second line Simmonds zucker or nyquist?
All 3 of these players don't have that much better stats than Bennett and Bennett has proven he can play a dirty physical game and drop the mitts with anyone

That could well be accurate, and it's understandable. This year has been a pleasant surprise. While they can't assume the next couple of years will be just as good, they also couldn't assume that this was the year to exhaust high-ish picks and their only legitimately valuable prospects.
The Flames were in a bit of a weird and unfamiliar spot today. It's not terribly surprising that their only trade was a minor depth move.

They are preparing for the loss of Giordano in a couple years. They see Valimaki as a likely replacement. It has nothing to do with Brodie.
