Right now they're ok with a cap hit of $55 million bucks, if you add Marner's and Nylanders lets say 19 million and Mathews 11, that puts them at $85.
The Leafs are going to have to make some tough decisions and hope they get a lot of help from their prospects.
This is really a 2 or 3 year window starting now for the Leafs.

They will sort it out.
What does seem apparent is that the landscape in the NHL has shifted with these new monster contracts for top players. Teams like Calgary could pay these dollars, but players who can earn $10 mil plus will choose to play elsewhere to enjoy their money. The so-called 'small market' syndrome is back, where teams like Calgary have to put it all together and win with their star players before they qualify for UFA status (e.g. the current Gaudreau and Monahan deals). But this time, the small market problem won't be solved with a salary cap.

Has there been any reported NTC or NMC? This contract is smart signing by the leafs. If they need to trade him later on in his contract, they can eat the signing bonus and trade him then. Will reduce the salary hit on the trading team.

Please don't misconstrue this post as opposed to the narrative that this is not an absolute coup for the Leafs. As many have noted, this is probably the biggest UFA signing since 2005 (Niedermayer). However, in a multi line team game I continue to wonder about the impact of one stud vs two high end NHLers. To use the local example, are you better off having McDavid or Johnny and Mony?
The delta change for the Leafs today strictly in terms of points is:
OUT:
11G/32A/43P
36G/18A/54P
IN:
37G/47A/84P
DELTA:
-10G/-3A/-13P
Obviously this does not account for the impact that these players will have on those around them, but I don't think the delta for the Leafs is strictly the addition of 84 Pts. I wouldn't be surprised if the year over year impact in terms of goals for is +/-10 and the goals against is in the same ballpark barring any further major moves on defense.

Can’t help but feel awful for Islanders fans. This has to suck.
I don’t think JT did anything wrong either. He played out his contract, gave the Isles every chance to win build a winning team the last few years, and they failed. He obviously didn’t see them have any kind of future (and to be honest I don’t either). Also seeing how much money he left on the table makes me think nobody other than the Leafs really had a shot at him.
Leafs are going to be scary next year.

I hate seeing the leafs get better. Would have preferred jt land anywhere but edm, van, to.
Ugh, now all we are going to get is the leafs shoved down our throat and at this point, rightfully so.
They have the best C depth in the league.

Silver lining is that in shoving the leafs down our throat maybe we get a little less McDavid

I was not wrong though. I did say the other 1% was the Leafs. I also said there was zero chance he would sign with the Flames. Guess I was right huh?

Meh, the mcdavid was amusing. Crap franchise with the only silver lining being mcdavid.
The media are basically justified in going full leaf home broadcast levels i grew up with.....
Living in TO just makes the problem 10x worse.

Because one guy left his team...
Best player in the league just signed an 8 year deal in the worst market on the planet.
Expansion almost won the cup
Take it easy chicken little

Bozak = $5
JVR = $7
Komorov = $3
JT = $11
I'd make that trade off everyday.

They are fine this season...it's next year that they lose a bigger piece

Kadri maybe? Either way they are set for awhile. Look at San Jose. Dubas seems like a very intelligent pro-active GM.
