Really seems like a bit of a mystery package with Czarnik. Should be fun seeing him get a chance, whether its 2nd PP time, or maybe a 3rd line try out, and how he does with the opportunity.

I would add that in Peters' tenure in Carolina, prospects that were called up would get a shot in the top 6. I expect that right side to be fairly fluid this season. Flames really thought highly of this kid, and I bet he sees some time next to Gaudreau and Monahan. Neal, Lindholm and Czarnik I think are the guys that move around the line up the most this season. What will be interesting is to see if Frolik or Tkachuk (or someone else) will be forming a pair with Backlund. I would assume the other two pairs in the top 9 are set.

Reminds me of the Mangiapane / Zykov contrast that was thrown around early when we signed Peters by Darren Haynes. Lemme look it up:
http://www.flamesfrom80feet.ca/2018/...l-mistake.html
Quote:
Last season, the Hurricanes brought up 22-year-old left-winger Valentin Zykov, who had led Carolina's AHL team in goals. He played 10 games in the NHL, spending his time on the team's No. 1 line alongside Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen. He even saw some power play time. In those 10 games, Zykov had seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) while averaging 13:42 in ice time.
It's a strikingly similar situation to the Flames and left-winger Andrew Mangiapane, who also led his AHL team in goals and also got a 10-game look in the NHL. However, the difference was how Mangiapane was deployed, playing mostly fourth line and not getting any time on the man advantage. The 22-year-old failed to pick up a point in his 10 games while logging just 8:56.

Fair signing on both sides. The second year on a 2 way is a good play by Treliving.
Prediction I think Czarnik is going to shine in training camp and push the coaches to give him a longer look when the season starts. He is on the small side but is pretty offensively gifted.

I like the signing for potential 'not depth' as well. We would never know what we have in Czarnik, Mangiapane, Foo as long as they were not put in positions to succeed and play to their strengths.
Peters seems like the guy who would like to find a fit, instead of making a player 'prove it' by mucking around in a checking role.

For all of the Canes' fans gripes about Peters, the one thing that really stands out about him is giving guys a chance. Mangiapane wasn't given a proper chance on the Flames last season, even though he had a couple of really strong games where he looked very dangerous. I do think that every prospect has to be looked at individually, and some need to start on the 4th line while getting their ears wet, while others should never that kind of usage and instead need to be surrounded by other talented players.
Hoping Peters continues that and we get to see Mangiapane, Foo, Czarnik in the top 6 and even guys like Klimchuk, Gawdin and Phillips if they ever get a recall this year.

Hopefully only happening if we assume they get recalled due to a top 6 injury.
And hopefully that's not happening

Is it me or do the Flames have more than the average amount of American born players on their roster?

Last season, 249 skaters and 23 goalies from the USA played at least one game in the NHL.
That's an average of just below 9 per team. The Flames currently have 9 US-born players under contract/RFA for next season (Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Ryan, Czarnik, Robinson, Gillies, Parsons, Hathaway, and Hanifin), and it's likely they won't all see NHL action.

Since we have a long break, might as wel try and drum up some player evaluation.
Anyone have an opinion on Czarnik?
In five games the 25 year old has 1 goal and 2 assists, he is plus 2, and averages 13:50 a night in playing time.

For $1.25 m on a two year deal Czarnik is providing excellent value. I love what his speed adds to the forecheck on every line he has played.

Is the new Byron but more skilled. Can play up and down anywhere in the lineup. Perfect middle 6 forward for us.

Cool Byron thread.
But for real I think this signing was a steal. I think he has potential to really be a force on this team. Just wish there was more term on this, because boy is he going to get PAID on his next contract.
Wouldn't have minded a 3-4 year @ 2.5 million instead of throwing money at Ryan. But thats just my opinion.

Byron also gets top 6 minute time, something he didn’t in Calgary.

For his skill and speed, it's a steal. However, he's not the savior either. I do like that he's a legitimate center who can win draws. He seems to be finding his way on the power play, but I think he can be a real asset on the second unit.
I said at the beginning of the year that I predict around 20 goals and 40 points from him. I think that's still realistic.
