Go Leafs. Sorry CP mega pool but I can't cheer for the Jets and I need one Canadian team to make some magic.

I actually like the divisional format - like having a divisional playoff and then a conference championship.

Once they add Seattle and they go to 4 divisions of 8 teams each I wouldn't be opposed to a 1 vs 4/5, 2 vs 3 playoff in your division. With 4 vs 5 in your division having a 1 game play in game.

Sure you have the odd season where one division is a lot better than another division but that is part of the fun, in the 80s it sucked the Flames had to play the Oilers every year in round two but it also resulted in some of the most exciting hockey ever. Maybe you don't get that matchup if you had to wait until round 3.

Shorten to a 76 game regular season.

Each team plays other teams in their division 4 times - 28 games.
Then a home and away against the remainder of teams - 48 games.

End the season each year so that you have a play-in weekend. With each divisional play-in game taking place with a double header each day on the final Saturday/Sunday before the playoffs start.

No matter what they do, someone won't like it.
The league tried too hard to create rivalries. A good rivalry develops organically, either out of proximity, incidents, playoff meetings (but not forced ones). Detroit hates Colorado because of things that happened, not because the NHL put them together. I’m betting the Preds and the Jets have a vicious series.

This is exactly the NHLs point though - it's not like they "force" the matchups by hand picking them - they get the frequent matchups by moving to a divisional structure.

Detroit and Colorado hated each other because they played each other in the playoffs 6 times over a short period of time. Most of the time in the conference finals.

By having a divisional match up it makes it more likely that you get the same match ups more frequently, leading to more heated playoff match ups.

We had Crosby vs Ovechkin once under the old playoff format, now we have gotten it 3 straight years. I'm betting we see a lot of these Leafs-Bruins match up over the next couple years too.

Wah, if you want to cheer for a Canadian team it's the Jets hands down. You never go Leaves.

I'm tempted to watch the Boston feed and listen to the homer meltdown should it occur.
