Is a player sent down in a paper transaction supposed to stay away from the team at that point? Or could he still practice?

There you go. Hathaway will play tomorrow.

Gulutzan confirms Smith starts tomorrow in Edmonton. Hints Glass-Stajan-Hathaway will indeed be the fourth line. #Flames

Jankowski will have to be sent down unless a trade happens before 3pm MT.

edit: I suppose still a change Hathaway is sent down today and called up before the game. But Why?

That's an awful 4th line, and I bet it gets exploited in the same way Grossman did in last year's season opener.

What's the point in Jankowski being here if he's going to be behind those 3 guys on the depth chart.

Gross.

I can live with Glass getting a contract (even though I think most of those advocating for it will be hating on him within two weeks) but seeing Janko potentially sent down really stings.

Hopefully there's another shoe to drop, because all the talk of Glass having "earned" his spot with a few pre-season games doesn't really mean a lot when one of camp's biggest stand-outs possibly gets sent down.

Also sounds like Brouwer will start the season as his regular black hole routine on Bennett's wing. Can't wait for Jagr to arrive as that's difficult to watch.

Because now that he has clears waivers he can be sent down in the next couple of weeks without having to clear again?

Sending Hathaway down and recalling him before tomorrow's game still necessitates sending Jankowski down before the game as the only other player who is eligible to be sent down besides Tkachuck.

The only reason to do that is to allow Jankowski to be on the opening day roster picture.

Of course barring a trade.

Very intriguing.

So in retrospect Hathaway not dressing for the last couple games meant they already knew what they had in him and that he'd already made the team. When we though it was Hathaway vs Glass it wasn't, they were interested in both. I guess my opinion prior to camp that Hathaway was nearly pencilled in on 4th line RW was correct.

The Brouwer rumours make a ton of sense as I don't think Treliving wants to be paying a veteran RWer 4+ million to be a 4th line grinder when we have Hathaway and Glass who can both do it for less than a million.

There's gotta be something cooking.

Seems obvious that Jankowski isn't going to Stockton. If he were, he'd be on his way there already, as he's waiver exempt, and the move would solve the roster issue (until Jagr signs, at which point Hathaway goes down and it's problem solved again).

The fact that Jankowski is still here, implies that something else is happening, with some other player not named Hathaway.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I strongly suspect Jankowski will be sent to @AHLHeat today. If so, he'll likely be back with #Flames soon.

I don't think so, because Hathaway has already cleared waivers.

You don't think so what?

The coach just said Hathaway is on the 4th line vs the Oilers. So something else has to happen in order to get to 23 roster players.

It looks like they want Hathaway and Jankowski up, but they will have to do other moves to accommodate. Whether they are waiting for LTIR to kick in for a trade, just working on details of a trade or will have to demote a vet is where things are curious. Something has to give and if they want to be compliant then they would just send Hatha way and Jankowski down. Could this just be a reward of sorts and they go down until injuries happen? Seems off to me.

"Earned, never given"

...unless you're a veteran. Then it's given, regardless of performance.

So, they need to be compliant by 5PM EST today right? Which means tomorrow they can start dealing again I assume?

So Jankowski gets "demoted" so they are at 23, then tomorrow they deal an extra body and "call up" Jankowski.

Then on the weekend or whenever Jagr is here they send down Hathaway.

Isn't this the problem?? What GM would want to pay that?

Well on a different team Brouwer might land 3rd or even 2nd line minutes. He just doesn't fit very well here. There's gonna be teams with injury problems or who have a need for a physical right shooting RW.

I don't think he's worth a ton but as long as he's willing to waive his NTC I don't think he's unmoveable.

I guess Bennett is saddled with Brouwer for at least one more game...

The old "our 4th line players would be 2nd liners on other teams" argument. I really don't think so. Not many teams with worse RW depth than the Flames.

Brouwer is just really hard to trade and the Flames don't seem to need the cap space this year. Unless ownership simply wants to save money.
