I think it was important for Tre to get that starters goalie in the sense that he wanted one and only one person to be the guy. No more tandems. Smith is the starter and he will have full confidence from the organization knowing that this is his team. Maybe it's the lack of assurance from the organization to the goalies that messes them up.
The other poster mentioned retirement, I may have missed that. Dont recall it being mentioned, it may have been but I didn't recall that as part of the story.
Agreed - it was not part of the story.
It was a story of the vet who wants a shot at a cup, and was personally calling four teams which he felt had that shot to see if there was any interest in him.
- Chad Johnson was only included in the Smith trade for expansion purposes. Arizona had no intention of signing him and both teams told Johnson the reason for the trade ahead of time.
Was this brought up as if to say we should expect Johnson back? Or are they gonna try one of the kids? Or go with a free agent?
Some more from tonight, but much of the same. No Burke tonight.

- States an arena will get built in the next decade - whether the Flames are involved or not is up to the City. This refers to the City needing an arena for the Olympic bid. Flames would like to be involved and feel they have fielded a fair offer, but reiterate they still maintain the CalgaryNext offer was fair.
...
By the way - minor correction - he did not comment or bring up CalgaryNEXT once.
His statement was that he felt the arena offer for the Victoria Park location is fair.
Also, when another STH asked, he said that the arena in Vic Park is to be the same as originally proposed in CalgaryNext, but obviously without the Field House/Stadium.

It was brought up in response to a question on whether or not we would be able to bring him back as we just traded him (and the potential moratorium of bringing back someone you just traded away).
Tre said that, seeing as he was UFA, there would be no issue (reading a little between the lines as he didn't want to comment, because the player has a contract with another team - technically).

If it's Jagr you don't say no to that. No one in hockey in their right mind would.
If it's Iggy, you see what you can fetch for desirable skilled forwards when free agency opens. If there's still a vacancy in your forward depth, I think you could make him a late add to help your PP. Doan, same deal. A little less interest there tbh.
Marleau, you look at the term. if it's under 3 years, you get that contract ready right now.
If whoever it is wants to come here for dirt cheap. Welcome. I like players who really want to play for us. Pretty nice our team is highly thought of like that.
Marleau would be a great fit, Sharp too. Jagr is Jagr - So good. Would always welcome Iggy back. I know people don't like Doan, but I always liked his game for the most part. I think he could play with some fire next season after what happened with Arizona.

Sorry - forgot to answer part 2...
Another STH asked about using Gilles as the backup. Tre flat out said that goaltender is the hardest position out there, especially because it is both mental and physical. He would NOT consider bringing up a goalie before he was ready (he'd seen the problem with guys brought up too soon), and would rather have them over-ripen.
No comment was made as to Rittich, but I left with the distinct impression he would be signing someone to be the backup - someone for our young guys to battle against.

Regarding the veteran, I think everyone is still under contract till July 1 and could not really speak to another team unless they were granted permission, which suggests it is Doan since the Coyotes have already notified him they will not be bringing him back.
I would not be upset if they signed Doan on a 1 year cheap deal, but I think of all the Ufa out there Marleau is the one who would bring the most to the Flames. Size, speed, skill, leadership, experience, versatility.
Doan and Iggy bring some much needed toughness though.

There's a free agent courting period now the week leading up to July 1. You can speak to any free agent as a team but cannot sign the deal until the 1st. Not sure if they can talk numbers or term or at least they're not supposed to.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
I also thought it interesting that a free agent player called Brad directly expressing an interest in coming to Calgary as he views us as a winner. My mind started racing. Who? Who the hell could it be?
That being said, I don't want him on this team. I have nothing against him. He's a quick tempered competitive person which can be good to have but I don't think he can get it done on the ice anymore.
What would his role be though? The team doesn't need any more mentors. He's too slow to keep up in the top 6. Could he handle a checking role?
I would totally think he would take that 4th line role no problem. Could also see him being in front of the net on PP2. I'm not sure who I like better Chaisson or Doan. Love Shane's grit and has a history of scoring, but Chaisson has better speed.
Good to see some mention and comment about Brouwer having a tough season. It's one thing to not play well, but some of the Brouwer talk about accomplishing what he set out to do at the end of the year got on my nerves.
Admit and face it was a bad year, and get better.
