The Flames in the two years after 89 come close to fmatching the disappointment, before they decided "hey, why win in the regular season either" the next year. In fact, after King was hired a year after that season, they were still a pretty high ranking team that still couldn't get out of the first round.

Interestingly enough, these two teams and the Preds are the only top 16 'possession' teams from the regular season left playing.
I thought this was supposed to be the best predictor of playoff success.

I think the Caps big mistake was in 2003 - Ovechkin over Malkin. Malkin - and they have one or more Cups already... I think it all stems from that. I shouldn't say "mistake" in the sense of "they dun goofed", but...

Backstrom has been a fantastic first line center and I suppose he and Malkin could have emulated the success the Penguins have had with two elite centers. I'm not sure if you can blame it on Ovechkin though. He's scored at a really good clip in the playoffs and it's really the team around him that's failed to rise to the occasion most years. If Holtby matches his career average playoff numbers it's probably the Capitals leading this series 3-1. He's the reason they are losing this series IMO.

Crosby's been on the delivery end of more than a few cheap shots over the years too. It's karma

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Uh, absolutely not. He didn't deserve that, no matter what story you want to make up.

Nobody "deserves" potentially life threatening brain injuries.

If that really needs to be pointed out to anyone, I'd be incredibly disappointed.

Yet that's a play that happens 30-50 times a game, it just sucks that that one time resulted in that.

Hell look at Jonny, he broke his hand from the say type of play.. it happens.

Niskanen had zero interest in Crosby on the play. He was sticking to his man who peels off behind the net which is the signal for Niskanen to stop. If you insist on watching in slow motion it is clear that Crosby runs into Niskanen more than Niskanen going for Crosby.

I hate seeing star players go down but some fans need to understand that with less than half a second to think, you too would stick your hands up to avoid contact at someone sliding towards you.
I disagree, he was planning to crosscheck him no matter what happened. He is a dirty player always has been and always had issues with Crosby.

You don't toe drag out of position like that with your stick up unless you are expecting to rock someone.

Ye he was about to crosscheck his ass out of the grease that happens many times in a game. Its just a freak accident that Crosby fell into him.

I hear your point, but if Caps draft Malkin and Pens draft Ovechkin, I still don't see how Caps would get past Pens. In fact, with all the pressure and leadership on Crosby, Ovechkin would focus on playing his game and would be even more lethal.

Might be just me but crushing the tip of a pinky finger with a slash is somewhat different than chopping a finger off. It was bad luck and a perfect shot to the end of the smallest finger, it took stitches to repair not a bone splint.

Don't get me wrong I hate these 100+ slashes per game every night and they should be stopped as per the rules but I would bet my house Crosby has taken 10x those type slashes than he's dished out.

Malkin makes other players better; I don't think Ovechkin does that. I am not saying Ovechkin is bad or blaming him for their lack of success. All I am saying is that the Caps would have done better with a franchise superstar C instead of a franchise superstar LW...

Mark Masters @markhmasters
Crosby absolved Ovechkin for his role in his injury: "The slash, he's trying to prevent a goal, that's a pretty common play for the most part".
As for Niskanen crosscheck, Crosby: "It's hard to say. I'm not going to sit here & guess, but it's not one that happens often."
Crosby said knee was never an issue.
