Perfect. Now I'm officially 100% behind this move.

Almost looks like Bartkowski is in, and they dress play one of Engelland or Wideman
That's what it looks like to me. I imagine Bartkowski gets a look for a week or two on the 3rd pairing with Engelland or Wideman. I get the impression the Flames are interested in re-signing Engelland next season, so unless Treliving finds someone willing to part with a bag of pucks, I think Wideman sits in the press box quite a bit for the rest of the season.

If we're lucky #6 will become available so Wotherspoon can have it when he finally cracks the lineup in 2027.

An analytics blogger is basically running the Coyotes and that's how we were able to get Stone on the cheap.

Big fan of this move. Low cost, low risk, for a former Captain of the Hitmen with a great shot and capable of playing 20+ minutes a night on a top pairing. Slot him in at #4, and he should see some success.

All for a 3rd round pick, great value there.

No personally I've had it with the guy, just not ready to assume the Flames think the same way.

Hope they do.

I do think his chances of dressing are less with the lefty righty thing which I hamhandely tried to point out.

That doesn't leave an Engelland / Wideman possibility at all.

Sorry all for not getting the right right

And yet was one of the top 5 trade targets in the media...

Honestly if they think that then they clearly haven't sat and watched Wideman in a top 4 role night after night. You can't possibly get worse for that role. You can't. Wideman is at the end of his career, Stone is not.

I think this means we'll be seeing the departure of Mr. Engelland fairly soon. He'll be in demand by a contender in the eastern conference.

This seems like a very minor move to me. May be a marginal improvement on an area that needed help, but doesn't seem likely to tip any scales. No big impact expected for a team in a playoff race.
I hope he reaches his old form.

Deryk Engelland is going to finish his contract as a member of the Calgary Flames.

I don't always know how to math, but that looks like 24 players on the roster. Is somebody on IR? If not, who moves? Somebody sent down? Another trade happening by tomorrow?

In the words of Roger Millions: hmmmmm

Hathaway can be sent down without waivers, or they could waive Freddie. Guy has played once in the last thirty days, it's pretty clear he's not viewed as a guy who can push anyone on the 4th line.

He is likely our most valuable asset "in play".

He'll be moved and he'll generate a fair bit of a return. i'm guest a late 2nd or better.

This is one of those trades that people suggested, and no one really objected to

With how weak the draft is, and the Flames own need for a tough defenseman on the backend, i'm not moving Engelland for anything less than a 1st round pick.

Wideman has been a train wreck this season, no question. I think you're underselling the impact this has on their back end depth. Anything that pushes Wideman down the chart is a big addition.

I highly doubt that, especially when we just got a top 4 D for a 3rd.

analytics guys not a fan, I saw one had this last week

This bothers me.

2013-14: "dragged down Yandle"
- He was 23 years old and it was his 1st full season. Short of being one of the leagues greatest D-men, all D-men will drag their partner down at that age.

2014-16: "propped up by Ekman-Larsson"
- Is this a passive-aggressive way of saying that Stone played pretty well for 2 seasons?

2016-17: "seems to have killed Goligoski"
- Stone had knee surgery to repair torn ACL & MCL, and was out for 6 months - he wasn't cleared to play until ARZ's 4th game of the season. Three weeks later, he suffered an upper body injury and missed another 6 games. I don't think any D-man would be playing up to his abilities under these conditions.

The stats nerds need to realize that there are factors that affect a player's game, which cannot be quantified.

No. The Flames are in the thick of a playoff race. As valuable as Engelland is I would warrant that the Flames see his contribution in the present as a more important commodity than his projected return in a weak draft.
