Systems don't matter if you're subtracting the heart in the process. You have to make the players believe, and push themselves, everyday. Culture, right?
This team needs a head coach that's seen this before and knows what buttons to press. I didn't have any issue with him not bag skating the team as I understand the approach but it didn't work and in hindsight he probably should have bag skated them. I don't get paid to be right on these calls and he does. His management of the goaltenders has been questionable as well. You have Brodie playing on the wrong side and it just seems everything he's doing isn't working out that well. His system looks fundamentally better than Hartley's but the only players that seem able to flourish under it is the bottom six players as the skill players have looked rudderless from the opening face off in October.

It's going to be a difficult offseason for the Flames as on one hand you don't want to fire a head coach after only one season but I'm not sure how they will sell season tickets brining this guy back. Because the fanbase never embraced this hiring in the first place.

Hoping to see some backlash after this game. No status quo BS.

I almost didn't even bother going when I saw Johnson was the starter. Should have trusted my instincts. This game was over before it started because of Gulutzan's idiocy in believing a backup goalie's hot streak that ended some time ago was still a thing.

What does that say when fans have better instincts than the head coach? His hunches this season certainly have been wrong most of the time haven't they? He doesn't appear to have a solid grasp of his goaltenders at the moment. The signs pointed to starting Elliott but he played a hunch and it was the wrong one as the game was over in the first six minutes.

I am disappointed that GG is not fired this morning. This incompetence in coaching/playing hockey cannot continue, for integrity and professionalism.

Hartley had his faults he also didn't seem to rub well with some players so this is not to be overly supportive of Hartley's coaching style but their were times when he used to blame himself or the coaches if a young guy wasn't playing well. When a coach starts putting it on the "young guy" it becomes a confidence issue. I think some of Bennett's and Johnny's problems are because they are put into situations that tend to fail, and "I believe GG does it because he wants them to grow". When you do that for long periods it's easy to lose focus and confidence. Even experienced players can struggle with confidence and ability in an environment that demands results on a nightly, game by game bases. Because Johnny is our top line player and getting paid for results GG needs to give Johnny whatever it takes to get his world class skill back, even if it means bringing up guys until we find the right player that can get the job done. Putting Johnny with the same situation that is not working does nothing for the team in the short term and erodes his confidence while wasting another year of forward progress. Winning is the main goal not working on stuff that doesn't get results until it is too late.

Tired of watching nearly every play in the offensive zone get cycled back to the point for a muffin shot into skates and bodies. Feels like everything is low percentage perimeter ahots.

Our best players haven't shown up all season.

Disagree on second part. Coaches role is to prepare, to implement systems. Motivation comes from within room, among peers.
Not defending Gulutzan, just say that's not his job

If the Canucks win tonight they overtake us for the final wild card spot.

Every coach has preparation and systems, some better than others obviously. Individual players are motivated differently and the best coaches know how to motivate players optimally so the whole team is motivated.

I think this is the head coach's main job. Though we can probably agree that Gully has been doing a poor job no matter how you look at it.

We had 25 shots at one point I. The 2nd, I would be surprised if more than a couple were legit chances. Everything was down the wing, sharp angle shots or point shots into on existent traffic.

We're only technically in a playoff spot by virtue of playing more games than anyone else. We're 9th or 10th by point percentage, and falling.

Has anyone else noticed much like last year the minute a team applies a pressure forecheck our break out goes to hell.
The puck support/positioning in the defensive zone is Fn' awful. Rim it hard around to...no one ,or the other teams D.

Someone needs to light a fire under this teams ass right now.
I want Glu to put Ferland Bennet & Hathaway together and just set them loose . Tell them to hit everything and create havoc.
Hansen brothers it up ,give this team some bite again.
Maybe Big Ern can be an asst.coach and just stare at opposing players from the bench

Team toughness and pushback is sorely lacking. Trades needed. You would think this team is tough looking at the penalty stats. But when they play they are soft, don't finish hits, and don't get mad about losing. All we have is a lot of hooking and holding penalties. I guess the team decided that pushing back is a job for the 19 year old rookie. Tkachuk is the only bright spot for me this game - at least he showed heart. Everyone else collecting a pay cheque and checking out. Gio, where is your leadership on the ice?

The team just can't score, make backups look like world beaters. 6 million dollar anchor on defence that should be a top line winger will do that to a hockey club.

Flames team STILL getting itself out from underneath Feaster.

Monahan has been soft as hell I watched maybe 5 min of the game last night but the part I saw Johnny was thrown down, and got up and threw a shove after the whistle and Russell came in and started roughing up gaudreau. Monahan was right behind Russell and could have at least pulled him away but he did nothing just skated past

Bottom line is that the players don't want it enough, and the coaching staff can't seem to get them to want to either.

Not a surprise here. We have been behind the Oilers all year and they have looked like the better team from the get go.

What bothered me last night is that it appears JG has been figured out somewhat - he dangles over the blueline and teams wait for his cross ice pass - intercept it and clear the zone. He needs to study some video and change something in his game.

What i liked about last night. Monahan showing why he is the #1 player on this team. Derek Engelland - lining up with Lucic. laughable that folks here would let him go as spare parts at the trade deadline.
