I'm pretty sure drinking a rye and coke will have a different effect on you than beer, if only from all the sugar and caffeine in the coke. Then there's the increased pace at which you will likely drink highballs if you're accustomed to beer or wine. I know that I get a different buzz when I'm drinking highballs vs beer.

When I was 21 I was getting WASTED 5 or 6 days a week. Totally legless wasted; I would split a 40 before I even went to the bar. I turned into a pretty prolific drinker, I had no problem boozing until 7AM. Ended up getting fat and was pretty broke.
I might do the odd 2AM but that's pretty rare. I'm more of a day drinker, I like a few pints on the odd Friday but that's about it. Way more into binging on food and working out these days. I'll take a hamburger over booze 9 times out of 10.
While reading this thread, I learned that I am not a heavy drinker. Holy smokes!
I'll split a bottle of wine with my wife a couple of times a week. Occasionally, a sip of bourbon every now and then. Beer makes me feel fat, guilty, and filthy.

I'm pretty sure it's just easier for someone to drink 5 rye and cokes as opposed to five beers.
For some, alcoholic syrup is better than fermented hops.
Troutman was obviously joking but there's some truth to what he said.
It has a scent while in its aqueous state.
Your breath will have a scent of alcohol digestion.
However, if you spill vodka on your clothes for example, it will evaporate within an hour and there will be no smell at all.

Experience tells me that Vodka is the perfect drink if you don't want to advertise that you are drinking.
It is the smart alcoholic's drink of choice.
I've spoken to some cops in Calgary and they all told me vodka is a cops worst nightmare because unlike beer or tequila, they can barely smell it on someone's breath.
This past Sunday turned into a bit of a mess. Started at the pub around 11 AM to watch the football game with a pint and a few double G&Ts, then ended up back at my place and finished a 26 of vodka and half a 26 of Akvavit. Felt fine the next day, too. Also helps that I have every other Monday off. So yeah, I don't really know if that makes me a heavy drinker because I hadn't had a drink for about two weeks prior to that and I probably won't go that hard again for another 2-3 weeks.
^ makes you a binge drinker more than a heavy drinker.
The heavy drinking will come, with age.
I need to re-evaluate my drinking. Half bottle wine almost daily, followed by 2 or 3 whisky. It's great in the summer, when every evening on the deck is 27C till 2am. But this year 'summer' started in February and shows no apparent signs of ending any time soon. Cheers.

Yip, I am well aware of how difficult it is to notice if someone is drinking vodka.

Bit late to the party but wanted to give my 2 cents on the whole 'Whisky makes people want to fight' mentality.
In my experience with Whisky what I've noticed is that they are never early nights. As far as hard liquor goes, JD is damn smooth after the 1st shot. Make it a Honey Jack and it's game over because that stuff is delicious. I've been blackout drunk only a handful of times in my life and it's always either Whisky or Kraken (I don't mix with Kraken anymore, the percentage is too damn high).
I do not feel the same way about Vodka, Rum, or Tequila (although I do enjoy a good tequila). They don't sit well and the following minutes I'm trying to make sure it stays down rather than being in the mood for another.
Its looking like I'll be drunk 5 out of 6 days this week. The only day off will be my actual Birthday which is backwards but yeah, guess it still happens.
