We're really belittling Monahan now to try to build up Johnny's value?
Monahan is a great player in his own right and is the real deal. He is going to be a cornerstone of the franchise for years, and if we are to win a Cup, he is going to be the biggest reason IMO.
Johnny is an excellent hockey player too. But his path to the NHL was different, his current rights are different than Monahan's were, and he plays the less important position. All of these factors determine a players value.
I am firmly on the side on management at this point. Johnny's agent can pound sand.

I'm not worried about either side talking at this point - I'm sure most of the important details have been hammered out - number and color of skittles delivered to Johnny's cubicle before every game - what type of container they are delivered in who drops them off, what they are wearing etc. lot's of details on these big contracts...
I think they are just waiting on the Oct 12 pressure point to finalize the number - I think there is motivation on both sides to get it done for the season opener. I say max term at 7.13 - see what I did with the last 2 numbers there.

It's way too early to worry about Bennett or Tkachuk negotiations. If they need to make roster changes down the line to accommodate those 2, then so be it. But right now, no one knows where those 2 players top out. Tkachuk for one hasn't even played a game yet.

Other teams pay Elite players Elite salaries, why do many here think the Flames should be different from every other team?

The big issue here is the Flames are not looking to set precedents on this contract. Paying Johnny $8M sets a bar for a player with no rights getting huge money. Paying him $6M on a 4 year bridge pays him substantially more than any RFA that has signed a bridge. Subban, Johanssen are 2 recent examples and both were paid less than $4.5M on their bridge deals. The Flames pay Johnny 6 then agents will use that as a bench mark which weakens a GM/owners bar gibing position. Murray Edwards is right there with Jacobs supporting Bettman in CBA talks. He is not about to sign off on a deal where the PA clearly gets their cake and eats it to

I dont see what is wrong with 6.725 per year for 3 years. Pay him well. At the end he has Arb. rights and can be signed to offer sheet. Match the offer sheet if necessary. At the end you will know if he can improve his act off the ice. Stand the rigors of the NHL long term and improve his game away from home. Really not the risk one would think. Also if you need to sign him for 10m a year for a longer term, Salary Cap may be adjusted to fit. 6.725m is not terrible and realistic. Flames have a business to run as well.

Honest question:
Are other fan bases panicking as much as we are about their holdouts?

At the end of the day, the flames have the upper hand, and they know it. Johnny knows he isn't getting 8 because there is no credible risk of him going to Russia. At best he's holding out for $7.0-7.50. Gio is at $6.75, which is where the flames will go to.
Whats the difference between the two sides then? About $0.25-0.75m per year for 6 years - or $1.5-4.5m. That's the cost of sitting-out less than half a season. Plus, you look like an ass to your teammates.
From a player's perspective, its clearly not worth it.

I actually had a dream last night I was hanging out with Johnny and trying to convince him to go to Calgary to negotiate.

Why? Are you in the room or something? Are you privy to the details of the negotiations?
Honestly, these kind of posts are just as tiresome as Gaudreauvertime's diatribe. You've basically been saying this over and over for a while now, you probably have written a dozen posts saying the exact same thing. We get it. You're rooting for management because either you've imagined in your head how talks are going and are offended because people in pretend land are being mean, or you're actually part of the Flames management group and have a legitimate opinion on how this is going. Which is it?
Personally I'm hoping they can come to an amicable solution that both parties are happy with. But you keep pushing the Johnny is greedy angle if that's what makes you feel better about this situation.

Tkachuk, yeah I get it. It's difficult to project (possible) four years out. Pretty positive Treliving and company are doing that but it's a tough forecast. Bennett though? Bennett's contract is up this summer, this is his final year. It's the exact time to be worrying about it.

Why? I'm always on the management's side in this type of thing. I couldn't care less if Gaudreau or anyone is underpaid for his value. In fact I hope he's severely underpaid! He's still going to be a multi millionaire.

If I'm Gaudreau, I'm pretty confident I have the leverage to not sign a bridge deal. What are the Flames going to do, bury me in Europe ensuring that I demand a trade?

Guys, Jonny is going to sign. He needs to play this year to get arb rights next year where he will have actual leverage. Right now he is negotiating as if he has leverage, which he really doesn't.
If they aren't deciding on a long term deal right now, then they are likely arguing on term of either 1 or 2 years. Johnny would want a 1 year deal to do this all again next year while the Flames would likely want to delay this a bit or get a long term deal hashed out right now. But he will sign for the season... would be completely illogical for him to holdout.

I think both sides want a long term deal. Johnny's long term might be 5-6 years and the Flames is 7-8 that is what Pylon was speculating was the holdup from his "insider". Not shocking if that is the holdup

I am thinking that if the Flames stands firm on the price tag and not move somewhat closer to Johnny's range, he will make the next contract negotiation that much more difficult and will look to leave Calgary the moment he can...

If Gaudreau does not want to play for the Flames they could let him sit and trade for Voracek.
Just saying this to point out how bad and how quickly an 8x8.25 deal can go really bad.
No RFA years in Voracek's 8 year deal based on a much better track record than Gaudreau and now the Flyers are hoping like crazy that he is better than 2015-16's 11 goals 55 pts and likely developing a plan to spend their way out of their huge mistake
2 years at 3.5 ... that is the pay scale that the CBA (NHPLPA/Owners) say the best players in the the world should make in years 4-5 of their NHL career.
If there was not a pay scale in play then Matthews, McDavid, Laine would be making 8-10 M this year. Tkachuk would be at 5-6M if he makes the team.
There should be no argument that Tkachuck and Bennett are far more important to the Flames over the next 3 years than Brouwer and Frolik.

Why? Because I do negotiations for a living and I know the parameters of the negotiation. You don't need to be an insider to know who has the leverage here. The CBA was written to give the club all the leverage at this point in a player's career.
This isn't a case of a club wanting to save money so the fat owner can get fatter. This is a case of a club trying to build a competitive team under a league imposed salary cap. Brad isn't trying to screw Johnny. He's trying to build the best team possible.
Johnny is trying to (rightfully) claw back as much money as possible. The unfortunate thing for him is he doesn't have the leverage to negotiate here and history would show us (Gio, Monahan, Frolik, Hamilton) that Brad doesn't screw over his players. There is no doubt in my mind that Brad offered Johnny a fair and equitably deal.

Voracek has 2 seasons of ppg and one was a Shortened season. He was immediately overpaid and all he has proved is he is a 40-50pt player that had a couple seasons where he put up big numbers. Bad comparable to Johnny
