The Kevin Lowe factor in picking national teams.
Eric brewer, Anson Carter, Ryan Smyth, and now a guy with just over half a season is captain of a team with multiple cup winners and guys who wear letters on their nhl teams.
Gee, I wonder who the oilers will make captain this season...

Sorry, Todd McLellan.
My phone considers anything Oileresque, obscene and auto corrects to the most Flames appropriate spelling.

I love that Gaskal is watching the OOT threads even in exhibition hockey for World Cup. He's tuning up just like the players.

With Matthews being a Leaf, we won't get quite so much McDavid blather!

Matthews looked pretty good and pretty big out there. A few missed passes but definitely a presence.

LOL TSN after the game highlights went straight to the Austin Matthews watch where they went over highlights of what he did. Man it's going to be tough this season listening to RSN and TSN fawn over this kid. It's almost like McDavid is old news.

It's a lot easier to ignore the leafs than it is to ignore the grease. Much happier days once the McCirclejerk dies down.

Some of the highlights of the the Russian game were pretty great. Panarin nailed a great goal.
Was very happy to see Gaudreau pot one.

Powerplay Quarterback
|
I'm dumb and don't know how + / - is calculated.
How can Gaudreau have a goal and an assist, for 2 points total and end up with a +1 rating when they shut out the other team.
Now the assist was on MacKinnon's PP goal, but MacKinnon still ended up with a +2 rating.
What am I missing?

Powerplay goals don't earn the players on the ice a plus or minus. Gaudreau was on the ice for the first goal (PP) and his own goal (ES), so that's a +1. MacKinnon was on the ice for his PP goal (no plus), Nugent-Hopkins' goal (+1) and his penalty shot goal (+1).
MacKinnon was the only who got a plus for the penalty shot.

Seems odd to get a + for a PS. Why wouldn't it be treated like a PP goal?

Because it's a surrogate retry on a 5v5 event

but it's rewarded on an infraction, in lieu of a penalty
it is not a 5 on 5 situation, it's a 1 on 0 situation

The PS is there to make up for the breakaway that would have normally been there. The breakaway was earned at 5v5, so it's a +1
Someone will have to chime in and tell me if a penalty shot while on the powerplay counts for a +1.

As would the PP, if the ref had awarded that instead
A penalty shot is simply another form of PP. It is not a 5 on 5 situation

Voted for Kodos

Penalty shot goals are also called power play or short handed goals if those were the situations when the infraction was called.
