Yeah, the broadcasts don't often make it clear about the difficulty value before the routine, if you're lucky you can see them at the electronic scoreboards.

They don't show execution scores per judge (the top flight competitions are supposed to use 6), just the average after the top and bottom are thrown out (maybe just based on gymnastics tradition since they've never shown the breakdown). The routine is known beforehand and the difficulty value can be determined. An additional pair of judges are used to make sure the performed routine contains all the elements it was supposed and to deduct as necessary if something is missing.

And for the vault, like diving there's a list of vaults that can be performed, each with a pre-assigned difficulty value.

Instead of reducing swimming events, let's increase track distance event disciplines.

Sidestep
Backwards walk
Crabwalk
Military crawl
Handwalk
Maybe a straightforward event where competitors run through the wickets like dogs

I believe there is more public funding of community sports/activities in Quebec, and I think it translates into a higher proportion of Quebec athletes representing Canada on the international stage.

Or perhaps I am wrong

For events that you run as fast as you can to be successful there alread are
100/200/400
110 hurdles / 400 hurdles
800/1500
5000/10000/marathon
Long jump / triple jump.

So more distances then swimming and 3 distinct disciplines rather than 4.

Which is pretty silly considering there is a perfectly sensible way of having a medals race.
Gold -3 points
Silver -2 points
Bronze - 1 point.

Easy piecy.
