Is there any chance there is debate over salary vs. signing bonus at play?
Most of the top UFAs signed for minimum salaries this year, while rounding out their pay as signing bonuses, making their contracts "buyout proof" and "lockout proof".

Since I put a fair amount of time into this (On my phone!), I may as well leave it here too:
Keep in my mind, the oldest signing on this list was 2011, when the salary cap was 13.6 million lower than it was last season
Gaudreau - 89PPG - ???
Hall - (At the time) .84PPG - $6M
Eberle - (At the time) .8PPG - $6M
Tarasenko - (At the time) .75 PPG - $7.5M
Tavares - (At the time) - .75PPG - $5.5M
Hopkins - (At the time) .74PPG - $6M
Benn - (At the time) .73PPG - $5.25M
Forsberg - .72 PPG - $6M
Couture - (At the time) .72PPG - $6M
Duchene - (At the time) .72PPG - $6M
MacKinnon - .70 PPG $6.3M
Monahan - .67 PPG - ???
Scheifele - .64 PPG $6.125
Seguin - (At the time) .63 PPG - $5.75M
Barkov - .62 PPG - $5.9M
-
AVERAGE (Excluding Gaudreau and Monahan) - 0.72 PPG - $6,030,000
Edit: Fixed my math errors

I think there's a mistake with Tarasenko, but good post.

Oh, you're right. I was wondering why his PPG was so low. Updated.
Thanks!

Hall is the closest comparable to Gaudreau on this list, .12PPG above average netted him an extra $700,000. So theoretically, Johnny's extra .5PPG on Hall should earn him roughly another $400,000 on top of that ($1,100,000)
$5,300,000
+
$1,100,000
=
$6,400,000
|
I'm confused, and maybe you've done some calculation that I don't see or understand, but how is the average salary lower than all but one of the AAV's on that list?

The average is $6,025,000
I suspect he added up all the salaries then divided by the 15 names listed...but only 13 of them have salaries that sum to the total, as Monahan and Goudreau are blank.

I'm not saying they don't want to be in yyc long term. I'm saying I think the term is the key hangup. And it's not the team shying away from term. This will all get done but if I'm the players then I prefer 5 years vs 8.

The way people can look at situations and expect or surmise the worst possible scenario every time just astounds me.
There is no chance of 5 year deals. None. Zero.
They will sign long term deals. If on the small chance that something goes wrong and they don't, they'll get 2 or 3 year deals.
Five is the one term that simply will not happen.

To be fair, I said 'if'
I think they will sign longer than 5 but IF they insisted on 5 I would take it as a very bad sign. That's all.

I wonder if there was more to the incident that resulted in the one game suspension than was reported.

It was tongue in cheek. But i didn't do a great job of reflecting that. All good. I saw you get blocked (who cares) and poked you a bit.

I'm sure there was, as the exact details of the reason for suspension weren't reported. That said, things seemed just fine afterwards. And Hartley is gone regardless. I personally doubt there's much ongoing rife between the sides based on that incident, which would be affecting these contracts.

God, seriously?
There is still a FULL TWO MONTHS before training camp. Yes, we are all eager too see Gaudreau and Monahan sign, but I fail to see anything out of the ordinary taking place here.

If there was, he wouldn't be praising his fired former coach (from the Darren Haynes article posted earlier.)

“Bob did a tremendous job with me. There's not too many better spots I would have liked to be at. He did a great job with me in my first season in the NHL, showing me how important the defensive zone is and if you're playing well in the defensive zone, it’s just going to lead to more time in the offensive zone. I thank Bob a ton for everything he did for me those first few seasons. He gave me opportunities on the power play, 4-on-4, 3-on-3, gave me all the chances to thrive in this game.”

You're honestly speculating that the superbowl incident is "holding up" negotiations? As in BT is offering them 8yr/3mil aav contract because of that?

His speculating it is pretty unfair to Johnny Gaudreau and lacking substantiated proof, and although the one incident would mean nothing by itself, it's possible that partying could be a legitimate concern on Brad's end.
Not to suggest Johnny falls under this category but many young star players who get celebrity and money right away fall into some issues with it, just look at Tyler Seguin. A young star who was surprisingly traded after partying became a serious concern for the team.
Again, not saying there's any substantial proof to it, but any degree of partying and coming to practice/game day in less than stellar shape could definitely be part of a contract negotiation for a young star.

And maybe not so much "Hey, you partied a little too much last season and were reported as not in perfect shape a few times at practice, so that's going to cost you $2 million a year", but more just "Hey, we believe you're the player everyone thinks you are and think you contract expectations are fair, but these patterns are a little concerning if we're putting pen to paper on $50+mil dollars of our owners money.
