My daughter, graduated last spring, is taking a gap year and going to spend December to April with extended family in Australia.

Anyone have any cell phone suggestions? She has a nice new, and paid off, phone on a plan here, and I imagine it would be desireable and convienent for her to keep her same phone number the time she is overseas.

But there has to be a better way to do it than paying Fido or Telus daily for International roaming (which is what I do for the 14-ish days a year I am out of country).

That’s it exactly. My normal data usage is a few GB (I work at home). I can get 3GB for 30 days for $21.50 and voice only for $27. Saves me $30 a month vs my current plan.

I’m not sure what you mean about toggling. Both sims are active - one for data, one for voice. Only interaction is renewing the data plan monthly or topping up if I go over.

If I am reading that correctly that with the eSim you are looking at spending $48.50- there are a lot of plans out there that are less than that. Koodo and Virgin have plans for $34 with 10 GB of data. Bell also seems to have a $39 plan with 50 GB data.

If you want to shop around, I recommend going into the mobile store inside Superstore. I did that when looking for a new phone for my son and got a great deal. Part included getting $200 worth of Superstore points. The big thing is that they deal with all of the carriers so they can alternate as to which one is the better deal.

I am thinking one option is for her to port her number to a VoIP provider, so she can keep the "same number" but then use an eSIM or buy a SIM while over there. That is of course thinking if she needs it for SMS texting or actual phone calls. Myself with an iPhone when I travel (shorter periods of course) my iMessage works, and the few friends who use Android we use WhatsApp. (This may change now with RCS messaging between iPhone and Android now.)

The other option might be to port to Freedom Mobile in Canada - while they may not have the greatest coverage locally, right now they have a 100GB data plan, and that includes 20GB "Roam Beyond" to use abroad for $55. She can keep her same number and use it freely in Australia (unless she needs more than 20GB). It's not a bad price. It also includes phone calls within the country and home to Canada.

Otherwise, if she has a phone that has dual sim, she can always try to get an eSim from an Australian provider and use that for data, and downgrade her Canada plan to very basic. It wouldn't help much for phone calls though.

It really grinds my gears that the only way to get a good deal is to switch providers. I am currently with Telus and my plan is over and I want a cheaper option. I went to the mall on Saturday and checked with Telus. The guys was super happy to help until he found out I was already with Telus then he said we can offer you that deal on the sign but for $10 more a month, that is only for new people.
He straight up said that the only way to get a good deal was to call their retention line.

So I checked with one of those all carrier places in the mall and I was able to find better plans with every other carrier.

Yesterday I called Telus to see what they could do. They offered a plan that was more than what I am paying now but with 100 GB of data. I told them, on a crazy month I use 4-5 GB, I don't need 100. So he puts me on hold for 10 minutes then comes back and says the same plan but for $5 less. I told him to pound sand and will be switching to someone else.

If u spend 10 a month more on a cell phone plan it's 120 a year. Unless you watch videos all day with no wifi most ppl don't use their data. I think these big companies sell u phones on financing and tie big data plans to it that you don't use to drive profit.

Just a thought pay out the phone if u can and go with the discount carriers. Quite a bit cheaper.

Always on corporate discount before. It was ok deal. I have 2 phones sometimes 3 in my household.

I pay 35 a month 30 gigs fido that's all I need.

I argue with telus on my internet over 5 dollars it's allt of money over 24 month contract. Be smart

Also after tax dollars your spending. Even if you make 6 figures it adds up with inflation streaming services etc

Isn't Saily the one recommended or offered by NordVPN? I swear I've seen that one before. I haven't looked at Saily, I've typically just used Airalo.

Yes, Saily is owned by Nord. I have VPN with Nord and a few months ago, they sent me an discount offer for Saily.

I used it last month in Spain and I didn't have any issues with it.

So I'm with Fido, And I've been very happy with them for the last year so since I switched over.

Now my base plan is pretty much identical to what their website is offered (they're offering $39 / 60GB. I'm technically at $39/50GB but a few months ago they sent me a random text offering an additional 20GB/mo for the next two years with no catch so it's actually $39 / 70 GB.

On top of the 70GB, they have this really sweet option of "five hours of unlimited data use per month". You basically go into your fido app, toggle it on, and a ticker starts. For the next hour, you could download whatever you want over data and it won't apply against your data limit. I've used it a occasionally at airports to load up offline streaming content on my phone, and I really like it because there's zero data usage anxiety over that hour. I also used it on a few road trips. But I'm sure even if I didn't use it, I probably would not be hitting 70GB of data.

Now that's not the only reason I'm happy with it...

If anyone wants a great no-fee cash back credit card, I highly recommend the Rogers Bank World Elite:

https://www.rogersbank.com/en/rogers...rcard_details/

Now this is a 2% Cash Back on anything (3% cash back on USD purchases, which I offsets forex fees a little) card, so I already consider it fantastic compared to every other no-fee cash back CC out there. This isn't a hard cash back (no cheque in the mail) but it's super easy to redeem - you just go into your rogers bank app, pick a transaction from the last month or so, and apply the cash back redemption on that transaction. HOWEVER if you use the cash back towards Rogers, Shaw or Fido bills (Phone, Cable, Internet, or purchases made on their website such as new phones), it becomes 1.5X cash back (so 3% cash back, or if you made USD purchases, 4.5% cash back).

Now combine that with Fido's $39 / 60GB plan and for every ~$1300 spent on the card you basically get your phone bill free.

But additionally Fido has a $5 month over five months referral discount - for both the referrer and referree. You can use this up to five times per calendar year for a total of $125 off. I've used it once so far this year, and I can give four people a referral that'll give us both $5 off per month for the next five months if you want (and it should reset in January so we can give it to five more people, not to get too deep into minmaxing a referral scheme). Send me a PM if you're interested. Just wait until black friday assuming they've got a better rate offered.

Since I've had to spend a bit of money on my personal CC for work expenses and I was travelling a fair bit recently, and typically the 2% cash back is a better reward than any of my other CCs, I've actually over-used my Rogers World Elite CC to the point where I almost need to get internet with rogers because my cash back rewards would cover my phone bill for the next ~7 months alone if I didn't even spend any money on that CC. I could use it against other transactions though, and still come out ahead.

EDIT: Update I was a little thrown off after writing this post that my monthly payment was $39 because I had remembered it being less a few months ago even without factoring in the referral discount. Apparently Fido increased their base rate by $5 after Oct 9 (and it turns out it was stated on the previous bill). I just gave their customer retention a call and she's implementing a $5 loyalty discount for the next 16 months. If you're on Fido already and your bill went up as well, give them a call.

I used it in USA this month and it worked very well for me! I only had to roam for one day because of some stupid two step authentication for lyft that required me to use my real number. Of course, as noted above, I'm just going to use the Rogers cashback to pay off the additional $12 roaming charge. But the Saily option worked great. I did the 5GB I believe, which for my trip (four days stay plus two travel days spent in the states) turned out perfectly.

Public Mobile has the best deal right now IMO. $35/60GB/5G and US AND Mexico roaming.

I was on EPP plan on Telus and it was similar but $55. So I switched.

I have been on Public for last few days and its exactly same as Telus. Just not wifi assist and live customer service which I never use anyway.

I actually just bought a new SIM card from the Telus store and will switch over this week. I was planning with the $30/mo plan for just Canada and the US but it looks like that changed over the weekend. $29/mo but now includes Mex, unless I remembered wrong.

Shaw/Freedom is terrible, the roaming charges when I went to the US last year were way too much.

Where are you getting a can/us/mex plan for $29?

Freedom's $29 and $35 plans (almost identical to Public's) include US and Mexico roaming now. I've been on freedom for 15 years and it's night and day now for service vs the old days. It also includes roaming to Rogers or Telus when signal is no good here. It's not for everyone but since Quebecor took them on from Shaw, it's been better and better.

I'm hoping that BF this week brings in some real plan competitions - none of these plans are particularly great. Canadians need all these companies to fight each other so we can save.

Yeah, Freedom is matching with their own CAN/US/MEX roaming plan but that low pricing is only for 18 months.
