Terrible decision. I have no interest in listening to Ron's folksy, homey crap any more.
A step backwards IMHO

When Maclean is directing traffic he's fine. But for some unfathomable reason he feels he needs demonstrate his encyclopedic knowledge of everyone in Canada who has ever played hockey at higher than a bantam level.
"And of course Jason's uncle Gordie played for the 67s back when Brock Pettinger was coaching. That was the year after they beat the Generals in that clinching game where they had to shut down the 401 because the snow as so bad. Howie Czerniak always said that was the worst blizzard he'd seen since he was assistant coach of the Raiders back when Mike Liut set the record for most wins in a season."
Thanks Ron.

You nailed it. Hilarious. So true. But it's the canadiana part that I love. Living in California now, I used to watch hockey day in Canada and miss home. Maybe some of us being too nostalgic

No matter what your view is on Ron Maclean as a hockey analyst, his return to HNIC shows that standing up for and defending your own views against more powerful foes, loving what you do for a living, and being very knowledgeable in your line of work - pays off in the end.
You got to hand it to the guy, he has stood up against both CBC and Rogers over the years and come out on top. Not many in that industry can say that.

I know you are trying to copy NFL broadcasts and TSN (which began their giant panels from the same guy copying the NFL) but it just turns into no-one watching getting to know and like the people AND all of the talent fighting to get their sentence or two in every intermission.
You don't need 6 guys on set every intermission. Less is more. Playoff hockey is on every night so you need people to feel like they know and like your hosts if you want them to tune in when their team is out.
|
The panels are intending to be a call-back back to the hot stove league, which dates back to 1939.

He's a shtick. A dated one at that.

So other than the fact that you and he will never agree on fighting, what is he actually saying these days that is "bordering on offensive"?

What? How does accepting a demotion from HNIC host to Hometown Hockey Sunday filler count as standing up to Rogers? You did highlight MacLean's issue in a nutshell in that nobody tunes into HNIC to hear his "views" but we have to endure them anyway. I'm not the biggest Strombo fan but it was refreshing to see a HNIC host actually host rather than try and be the focus of the show.

Somehow I suspect they are more trying to copy the NFL (or big US network) model than copying what they did on the radio in 1939.

Strombo was good at moving things along but he was cringe worthy anytime he was forced to delve beyond superficial hockey talk and buzz words. Now if they would just pair up/replace Ron McLean with one of those delightful female Instagram celebrities we'd have the ratings issues solved.

I wouldn't say that I was a Strombo supporter, but he did a great job directing traffic and I felt that he let the panelists talk. Whether I agreed or disagreed, I heard more from the supporting cast and the panelists this season than I have before and I liked that. They actually had a chance to express and explain differing views.
MacLean always seems to steer towards his agenda, and often interrupts to get things to where he wants them to be on a specific topic; and don't get me started on puns that weren't even interesting 20 years ago. I felt that the hometown hockey "gee whizness" was perfect for MacLean, where he could ramble on about something Maple Leaf related (I know that he is from Red Deer) and we could all change the channel until the game restarted.
Strombo also seemed to have a good chemistry with his panelists, and worked to bring them into the conversation as well. That's a good host to me.
Does anyone watch hockey for the pregame and postgame anyways, or is it a complement to the actual game of hockey? P.S. please bring back Peter Puck; as a young player I learned more about the rules of hockey from Mr. Puck than from any coach. (my fave was the offside rule which had a guy sitting in a chair reading a newspaper in front of the net...pausing his reading only to whack the puck by the goalie #classic)
I am against removing Strombo especially for MacLean. It isn't like we are getting Leah Hextall to replace Strombo.
