Columbus is looking for top centres.
They have Jones as their cornerstone D and are looking to shed salary to keep him from being offer-sheeted.

I'm not sure I even swap Brodie for 3 straight up. Just look at the oilers predicament in trying to trade for D.

Brodie is the most valuable asset on the Flames roster. No way he goes to Columbus for 3rd overall

I don't understand how Brodie is still so under appreciated, even by Flames fans. He's turning into one of the best defenceman in the entire NHL, he's only 26 years old, and he's signed to an amazing contract.

Might be trying to get their ducks in a row with an offer that if JP falls to 4, the Flames trade up to get him on the off chance that the Jackets decide to take Brown/Dubois.

Also because Dubois is an immensely better prospect than whoever will be left at 6. Also it is good to control your own destiny. Better to have a high pick and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Hahaha, Brodie to move up 3 spots. That's a side splitter.

I think the Flames have Dubois at #4 on their list ahead of Tkachuk.
I also believe the Canucks have Dubois at #4 on their list ahead of Tkachuk.
I also believe the Oilers prefer a Dman like Chychrun or Sergachyev over a forward... guys who will be there at #6 anyways.
Getting up to #4 jumps us ahead of the Canucks and gives us PLD, a guy with a massive ceiling and a style of play that fits Treliving's MO in every way moreso than the likes of Tkachuk (slow), Nylander (lacks compete), Brown (lacks compete), Juolevi (redundant).

No, no it wouldn't.
If this isn't a shining example of people MASSIVELY overvaluing shiny new toys, I don't know what is.
Brodie is a star - one of the top 10 or 15 defensemen in the NHL.
No way in hell do you trade Brodie for the 3rd, nevermind just to move up.
Trading an NHL star to move up 3 spots in the draft is a measure of stupidity that would embarrass Milbury for all time lunacy.

Not advocating it. Just saying.
Burke once moved Bryan McCabe (who was a pretty valuable commodity at the time) for one of the Sedins. That's where I'm coming from.
Of course it won't happen. Flames drafting sixth is fine by me.

There is just no way Brodie is the ask from CBJ.
Way more likely they say Monahan or Bennett if the ask is astronomical.

If Treliving offered up Brodie for #3, he would be fired on the spot.

Bryan McCabe was never a top-ten NHL defenseman. Under no circumstances would TJ Brodie be part of any serious discussions in a trade for the #3 pick unless there was a massive additional return.

Aren't you the guy that doesn't like Tkachuk? If so that's why you don't understand it. Tkachuk/Dubois are very attractive players and fit our needs extremely well. Could be worth moving to get one of them especially since the cost to move from 6 to 4 should be lower than the cost to move up to #3.

Bryan McCabe wasn't even an overly valuable commodity at the time of the trade. He didn't blossom until years later.
A better analogy would be "Colborne and next year's first" not "Brodie and 6th overall"
That's closer to the value you seem to be referencing.
