“If he’s not (NHL) ready now,’’ reckons Hawerchuk, “he’s not far off.

“He’s one of those kids that always seems to find a way. Probably like (Johnny) Gaudreau.

“I remember when I was ready to sign him here in Barrie, he was pretty small and I said to him: ‘What do you think about playing in the OHL? Any worries with the size of these guys?’

“And he just looked at me, didn’t so much as blink, and said: ‘I’ve been dealing with that my whole life. I have no problem with it at all.’

“I think he relishes the challenge to beat ‘the bigger guy’ or the so-called ‘bigger name guy.’

“He’s got such anticipation and has a low centre of gravity so that what might look like a dead-heat for a puck, because of those two qualities, he gets there first.

“And there’s no stop. He keeps his feet going. He moves to make plays.

Theo (Fleury) had a bit more of that nasty edge to him, but I do see some of him there. Mangiapane is one of those guys I had to get on a little bit and remind him: ‘Hey, look, you can’t fight every battle just ‘cause a guy gives you the extra shot here or there. You’ve just to take it sometimes. You can’t keep retaliating.’

Poirier was ranked at 8 just above him. Looking forward to seeing Mangiapane play this weekend and also just happy we can actually get excited about a prospect pool that is deep enough to have a skilled player ranked at 9.

Tyler Benson is a wild card for me. All kinds of potential coming out of bantam but he's had injuries to contend with in junior and didn't play much last year. He could turn out to be a bust or a great second round pick if he pans out.

They have struggled just getting first overall right until they lucked out last year. I am confident I will watch our 156th pick embarrass their 32nd this weekend.

I got nothing. Strictly personal conversation about how summers were and how the families are doing.

I was waiting hoping for some hockey talk but there was nothing.

And then it got to awkward to keep sitting there with no food.

“I’d never seen him play live, I can say that, and he’s got a presence on the ice,” said Stockton Heat head coach Ryan Huska, who is running the Flames’ bench in Penticton. “He’s a different player than I saw in practice when he plays the game. He drags people into the game with him because he plays hard, he’s in people’s faces and when the puck is at the net, he’s always at the net.

“So, for me, my take from this was if you’re going to play with Matthew, you have to be engaged in the game because he’s going to be around it all the time. I think that’s what makes him a special player and why he’s had success over his last couple of years.”

Tkachuk - Bennett - Ferland. Maybe this is the kid that's able to pull that extra bit out of Ferland that we all think is right there.
