First of all, I want to say that I believed a Hartley system could would with the right group of players (maybe the Ducks' roster?)

But there were a lot of issues with it and these are the aspects of play that I think Treliving will want to address, that a guy like Randy Carylyle doesn't fit:

1) Highly controlled zone entries, with emphasis on a carry-in, and if no carry-in is there a lateral rotation of the puck to an opposite wing before a dump. These require constant repetition and set memorization.

2) Aggressive defensive system, with a body constantly on the man forcing quick decisions, even if it means the "risk" of getting caught out of position. Likewise, more "risky" zone exits through the middle of the ice. Don't get rid of the stretch pass entirely but have the center play deeper back at times.

3) Aggressive penalty kill, more like what we saw the second half of the season with all the shorties rather than the first half of the season.

4) Controlled line changes, you can change your lines without getting the puck deep from the red line - by passing the puck backwards or by taking the extra three strides to get the puck on net for a freeze. Also holding on to the puck in the perimeter of the offensive zone while bodies change out one-by-one rather than as a 3 / 5 man group.

5) Offensive posting on the corners. People think the Flames lost "battles" for pucks in recent years. Yes, they did to an extent, but more importantly they lost "races" for pucks because they emphasized inside slot position. The opponent would always have a two, three step head start to the walls because the Flames didn't keep anyone posted on the walls. It starts with a more aggressive 2-1-2 forecheck IMO

6) More confidence in less-obvious-choice defensemen (Hamilton, Nakladal, Kulak, and Wotherspoon) to make plays in the defensive zone rather than chip the puck out to exit.

I think those six things are going to be prerequisites in the "philosophy" of the next coach.

As soon as Calgary announced Hartley was being dismissed, there were rumours that Boudreau was already on his way to Alberta. But no, he was playing golf, although he acknowledged there have been expressions of interest.

“I can say that I’ve had conversations,” he said.
This is the first I've seen Boudreau officially linked to us in any way, thanks for the link

People tip cabs??

Carlyle would be hilariously sad. I doubt he ever coaches in the NHL again.

No problem. I did edit my original comment to suggest that he may have been talking about other teams but certainly the way it was worded, to me at least, suggested Calgary.

I voted Bruce Boudreau, but the more I think about it the more I like the idea of getting a new up and coming coach.

It'd be cool to get Boudreau, but if we end up with someone like Travis Green - I'd also be pretty happy.

I don't. They are already ripping me off as far as I'm concerned, why would I give them MORE money?

I don't and no one I know personally does. I mean I don't ask for change if I am paying cash, but I won't tip on purpose.

yeah I think Boudreau was just talking about "discussions" he's had about openings ... don't think he was referring to Calgary specifically.

Looks like a lazy quote in a Coxe article

Carlyle also did a heck of a job for the Moose (1996-2005), and led Anaheim to their first Stanley Cup. Hell, he led the Leafs to their only playoff berth since 2003-04. When he was fired last year, the Leafs were 21-16-3. The replacement coach was 9-28-5.

Say what you want about Carlyle, but his record speaks for itself.

Paul Maclean was in charge of the special teams apparently. Although it does show that Boudreau delegates well.

Man, I always tip cabbies, unless they've given me the runaround. I don't assume they are ripping me off and usually I know the layout well enough to know that they aren't.

Also people who cut hair (unless they own the shop), wait tables, carry luggage.

I don't think he's as bad as people think. Just the Toronto media spin that gets put on people, just like Burke.

Sutter + Crawford. Let Sutter manage the defensive systems, Crawford the offensive/special teams.

Why not!?

Great record in junior, former NHL assistant coach, former WJ head and assistant coach, long playing career in the league under Roger Neilson, Darryl Sutter, Brian Sutter, former Conroy teammate, was interviewed in San Jose and Vancouver, and plays a fast, aggressive, skilled style.

Local organizational background, and a no BS, truculent guy.

If they really are going off the board, he checks many of the boxes.

He looked brutal at the World Juniors this year. Some terrible coaching decisions were part of the reason why Canada disappointed this year.
