Kylington: Did not like his gap control. Thought he was able to catch up due to his skating, but put himself in positions to have to recover that he never should have been in. Played way too far off the puck. That's a coachable change though. For the old, oldtimers, another guy who started like that was Jamie Macoun.
Shinkaruk: Not placing too much in his game until he gets into games that actually matter. I like that he got a taste, but want to see a huge offseason for him.
Elson: Showed some grit after getting drilled by Jones. Made a few real sensible plays. A guy like Jooris is replaceable with a guy like Elson.
Seiloff: Really impressed with his game. Made a handful of real good solid hits. Got caught out of position once but bailed out by Giordano. Made sensible plays and put the puck on sticks on the breakout plays. With his physical play and our lack of guys who finish checks like that, he could be a darkhorse for next year.

I love the dislike between both sides, but we have to be careful. No injuries.
Shots are 21-5....Backstrom is on tonight.
If we can't get our PP going for the postseason though....damn. Not cool.

This was a good game to get ready for the playoffs until they decided since they are dominating the shots and have a 1-0 lead they didn't need to keep playing.
No idea how you get anything positive out of it now.

Did that Canucks fan actually call their season successful because they finished 3rd last?
I get wanting good odds, but to label that success is the most pathetic thing I've seen on a Canucks board.
Some owner/GM combos have to literally be forced into rebuilds by how much worse their team is than they thought. We've seen it in EDM, here in CGY and I'm sure in other places as well.
If your team really needs a rebuild then face planting into the bottom 5 is a success in a certain way. Lucky for us 2013 was deep and we could get Monahan at #6 despite not face planting quite as bad as the Canucks did.
Hard to explain. I'm not unified in cheering for anything really in this weird lost season limbo. I cheer the Flames on while hoping they lose. That's the best way to describe it.
I'm almost always happy when we score (tonight was an exception I have to admit) and usually I don't take wins hard. But 4th last was right within our grasp, we were half a period away. This one stung slightly, I wasn't massively disappointed for the other losses but so close to 4th and with CBJ completing the unexpected comeback.
Ah well May the lottery odds be ever in our favour. Go lottery machine! Go Dallas!
This sums up my watching of the game.
Brandon Bollig (Stamkos) snipe in game 82. Right then. Time to go check the steaks.

Any way you look at it, 28th place is not a success. The player they draft could turn out to be a success. But we don't look back on 2012/13 as a success because we got Monahan. That season (the shortened one) was still a complete disaster. And if they're going to think that way then they belong in the same boat at the Oilers and their fans.
The Niklas Backstrom of this game would be great for next years Flames. A calm, composed and motivated veteran to be relied upon while Ortio eases into his role. Too bad he's likely gonna show up as the washed up, terrible, 4.5 GAA version if he's somehow signed.

I have no problem with the team offering him a professional tryout. But no 3-headed goalie monster ever again. He'd have to displace the 2nd goalie to earn it.

The Hockey Gods never reward the Flames. The last time they won a Stanley Cup I was five months old. I grew up with half my peers being ****ing Avs bandwagoners because the Hockey Gods didn't do **** for the Flames in my lifetime.
There is No Hockey God.
I used to think this way too, until Game 7 of the cup finals in 2011.
I am pretty sure I saw a glimpse of the hockey Gods peeking through the clouds high above the smouldering ruins of downtown Vancouver that night.

I was born within a couple weeks after the cup win. So I feel the pain of those here that feel like relatively younger fans have never gotten to witness the good fortune like that of other clubs in the past couple decades.
But the hockey gods have made sure the Canucks and Oilers have continued to toil in obscurity, and the one time the Canucks got their chance at greatness, their tumble from grace could not have been more embarrassing and painful, while their worst moments were broadcast for the world to see none the less.
I think they have a larger plan for this Flames team. They're already teaching us that team changing players don't necessarily come from the top, even with all that pop and hype, but from further down, if your scouts have the smarts to see it. And how the Flames have done well for themselves in that regard. Who are the catalysts for this team now? Highest ever pick Sam Bennett? In the future maybe. No...two 4th rounders. Who is leading producer of the 2013 (and 2012) draft class? 1st overall Nathan MacKinnon? Drouin? Lindholm? No...6th overall Sean Monahan. One spot difference and we probably would not have him nor the bright future we do at center. Alternately what has 4 first overalls done for the Oilers? 3/4 are going to be shipped out by the time they even begin to turn their mess around. So again.. if you think the hockey gods have not been doing us a kindness then you haven't been paying attention. This is why I think wherever we pick... he'll turn out to be a damn good player. Maybe not the best of the bunch. But maybe just what we need to be successful, and that he contributes to that success is more important than stats even.
Bergeron > Kessel...am I right?
I think the hockey gods are telling us that we need not worry because things don't always play out how people expect. And when eventually we do get a lottery win, I think that player will be a Tavares type top pick rather than a Yakupov. Believe in this scouting staff that found Gaudreau and Brodie, and Eat Bread in the 6th round last year. They will find us another gem.

Pretty hilarious the way the game played out, with Backstom (gone) standing on his head, Bollig (everyones' favourite) potting one, and Sieloff (who might not ever play another NHL game) getting an unlikely goal.
Can't imagine a scenario that would be more of a troll job for the tankers.
Anyway, the way I see it is:
In 2013, we sat 6th in the draft and got Monahan
In 2014, we sat 4th and got Bennett
In 2015, we sat 15th and got Hamilton
THis year we sit 5th, pending the lottery, and we'll get another very good piece
