Crazy speculation warning, did things sour there, were they actively shopping him, because he wanted to be moved, because they wanted to move him? We're only three years out of his draft year, still very early. Really good numbers in the AHL this season.

Super odd trade from a Canucks perspective imo.
Meh, I wouldn't put too much into it. The Capitals "gave up on" Forsberg, and look how that worked out.

I didn't realize Shinkaruk was having a good season in the AHL. Last time I bother looking at him he was struggling.

Granlund had the potential to be a Backlund replacement (3rd line center), but with Backlund and Stajan signed for a couple more seasons, not much room for him.

Shinkaruk might have an attitude problem but he does have potential to be a future 2nd liner so I think the Flames have good chance of winning this trade.

I hope it's Benning following through on his promise to be a buyer at the deadline. You gotta give something to get something and Granlund is further along in his development to help the Nucks win now.

Bob McKenzie on Twitter is speculating that Weisbrod might be an influence. He was with the Flames when they had Sven and Granlund in the system and passed over Shinkaruk in the Draft.

I've never seen Granlund as any more than a Dustin Boyd level tweener. Not a bad player, but not good enough for top 6, not suited for bottom 6

Shinkaruk definitely has the higher potential. Pretty good season so far so hopefully he works out

I think the Flames made a great move, but too early to be picking winners

He is still in the first year of his ELC right? So waiver eligibility considered I think this is a good trade. Granlund could very easily turn out to be the better player however

#Canucks Benning says Shinkaruk liked to score but "we don't know if that translates to the NHL."

From the Canucks Board on HF:

We just traded Shinkaruk for essentially another Linden Vey. I'm fuming right now. Feels like I've just wasted so much of my life following this team for nothing. I can stop watching games but stopping following them altogether is going to be rough. But it's going to happen. There is no point following a team that makes you so angry, good job Benning. Good ****ing job Benning you stupid ****ing ****!

Shinkaruk with his Gaudreau-esque goal

Interesting. Sad to see Granlund go as I was a big fan of his. But Hunter is pretty intriguing, and fills a need.

And with that, the Flames have four 1st round picks from the '13 draft.

-Monahan
-Poirier
-Shinkaruk
-Klimchuk

Soon to be Nischuskin or Drouin??

All your 2013 1st rounder are belong to us.

I think a poster summarized it best earlier:
Granlund has a higher floor, Hunter a higher ceiling

Personally I think Granlund has a future as a successful 3rd liner. Great shot, great iq, defensively sound. I wouldn't be surprised if he is essentially Backlund in a couple years

But, he has a face I just want to punch over and over again. It will be hard to watch him.

I used to be really high on Granlund and thought he would take a step forward this year.

He started pretty well with the Flames this season, but ever since his first small handful of games, he's been dominated in terms of possession whenever he's on the ice. It almost felt like he had taken a step backward in his development. He was facing easy competition and was still getting crushed. For a player who is supposed to be defensively sound, I wasn't happy this year.

I'm not a huge fan of Shinkaruk, but at least he's waiver eligible and has decent upside.

Granlund could be Backlund, but he also really reminds me of Roman Horak.

Yup. What I said earlier:

-Treliving not attached to old guard's guys; and
-Major player of the old guard is now in Vancouver, so has major input into players - aka acquire his old guard players.

Craig Button had Shinkaruk as the Canucks 3rd best prospect behind Demko (2nd rounder) and Boeser (1st rounder).

I guess the complete lack of centre depth made the canucks do this. Can't think of any other reason why.

I like Granlund but figured he was gone anyways. We got something for him I guess so that's alright. Haven't paid any attention to Hunter, hope he has abandoned his junior tendencies.

Weisbrod once compared Granlund's talent/skill to Gaudreau's, so no doubt he was influential in this trade. Guessing this is a situation were one team really wanted a player and was willing to pay for him, not unlike the Avs/Roy really wanting Berra and paid more than perceived value
