It was his terrible giveaway that led to the goal. The easy option would have been passing it behind the net, but he chose to go cross ice in a very dangerous area.

Yes you can. He had the puck on his forehand, staring at the neutral zone and instead of clearing it he circled back into his own zone and lost the puck.
