I fully expect Buffalo to be in there with a well publicized, gigantic contract, then have him pick Toronto.

I wonder if the Flames were free from the Wideman, Bollig, Raymond, Engellend, Smid, Stajan, Bouma deals if they would be big fish hunting targeting Stamkos, Backes, Lucic, Eriksson, Ladd? Pretty decent UFA crop for forwards this year

Stamkos is very appealing because of his age, elite goal scoring ability, right hand shot and versatility of being able to play center and RW.
Tough to build a team though, when you have one player making roughly 1/7th of your entire cap.

Take with a huge grain of salt, as this is close to Orange Julius territory, but I had dinner with friend who has a friend who is very close with Stamkos' agent. Naturally the agent can't share details on their clients, but the impression made to him was that Stamkos had no interest in coming to Toronto as of April this year.
Anyways, just passing on what was shared with my friend

Persoanally I do not think he signs with the leafs as his personal life would be nil in Toronto.
I fail to understand why John cooper would want to battle with the teams biggest star. To me as a coach would you not want to ensure you and your big gun are on the same page from day one?

Grew up a Leafs fan, has three times liked tweets that said he should go to Toronto only to back pedal and say they were accidents. Yeah, no chance he ends up in Toronto at all. I think the better question is are the Leafs interested in Stamkos?

I think he was just trolling the media/fans when he did that.

Highly unlikely. Why would you troll your favourite team growing up fan base? I think more likely was he was advised every time to take the likes off, probably from his agent.

Lame. There has been plenty of speculation he could end up in Toronto. They have the cap, he grew up a Leafs fan, and they have a good young foundation with a great coach. I am by no means a Leafs fan, their centre of the hockey universe crap drives me nuts, even more so as I am in Southwestern Ontario. That being said it makes the most sense.

If the Leafs sign Stamkos how can they continue to preach patience? With Stamkos,
Matthews, Marner joining the team with Nylander, JVR, Kadri they would be good up front. Trade for a Dman and goalie they could make playoffs next year.
I think if they steer clear of Stamkos then they keep the slow build going

Personally, I'd be thrilled if we could land Stamkos, but who am I kidding. It ain't happening.
It'll either be the Leafs, Detroit, or Tampa.

Because Stamkos is only 26, he's only 6 months older than Kadri and 15 months younger than JVR. I can't stand Toronto but he's the perfect fit there, young team he can grow old with, the team should have success in 2-3 years and make a massive amount of endorsement money.

Stamkos takes them out of bottom feeder status and likely they are not drafting high again for a while. If they have Stamkos there is no tank

Are they in a race with Edmonton for futility? last 2 years they drafted 8th,4th and now this year 1st overall. Time is now to start winning.

I was against them signing Stamkos but you're right. They can't go on being bottom feeders forever.
