Yah, I noticed it too. It's like some people like to reconfirm how awesome their location is by cutting down Airdrie residents any chance they get. The whole "20 minutes to downtown! har har" joke is so overused here on CP. Honestly, I look at Airdrie as pretty much another suburb in Calgary. Yes, I realize they don't pay taxes on infrastructure in Calgary, but that's just how it goes. No use getting all upset about it IMO.

It is the "Thanks Obama" & "Thanks NDP" of geographical jokes.

Really?
You ever go out for dinner with like 20+ people and everyone has a great time and then the bill comes and everyone throws money on the table and someone counts it all up and there isnt even enough to cover the tab let alone actually tip the server?
It always happens because some people are too cheap pay their fair share or thought what they had wasnt worth what it cost so they throw in less, and then what happens? Everyone else has to pay more to cover it.
Are you usually that person? How much do you enjoy that?
Also, I think its worth being upset over because if something isnt done then we become Detroit. The City itself is bankrupt despite the fact that some of the wealthiest citizens and communities live no more than an hour away.
Nobody gets something for nothing or else that something eventually erodes into nothing but no one cares so long as they've taken their piece.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Isn't that a little exaggerated? We're talking about a community of 60K vs. a city of over a million people. That's 0.006%. So I guess in your restaurant example, I don't really care about covering 0.006% of the bill. If we are really that anal about other people using our services for free, shouldn't we be taxing everyone who doesn't have a Calgary address?
Edit: Crap, not good at math, that's 6% more. I guess whatever, point still stands. I don't really care if I have to cover 6% if someone doesn't pay enough at dinner. Me and my buddies always overpay anyways, so I've never encountered your restaurant situation.

Sure. Then add Okotoks, Cochrane, High River and Strathmore. Now how much is it?
Still cool with paying for other people? For how long?

Better yet, build a barbed wire fence around the city. Put sentry guards at every road into Calgary. They could ask drivers for proof of (papers please!) where they live and if they are "parasites" have them pay a toll to enter the city.

we must not forget the Airport. I propose we charge a $10 arrival fee on each non-resident passenger
Perhaps We should also extend the fees to critters: e.g. $10 Bull**** fee for the animals brought in for Stampede

Reason: additional thought
I think it's because the residents of Airdrie are usually fairly vocal about how much better their lifestyle is than Calgarians. A lot of us find the "I have everything I need", "only 15 minutes from downtown", "get away from the hustle and bustle from the big city" stuff to be hilarious.
Personally I'd love to live in a place that has everything I need but isn't Calgary, yet still close enough for something like Flames games to be fairly easy drive.
That place sure as hell isn't Airdrie, but maybe something like Olds, High River or Strathmore maybe. Never really looked into it. People wanting to get out of the city doesn't bug me. I find holier than thou Calgarians much more annoying than smug Airdriettes

I guess I don't see how living in a suburb of Airdrie is any more 'out of the city' than another other of the city's far-flung suburbs. Every patch of Calgary the size of Airdrie has its own malls, own schools, own restaurants, own movie theatres, etc. What, exactly, does that 20 km stretch of highway protect Airdrie residents from (besides taxes)? Is it just a psychological buffer to protect them from the spectre of gang shootouts and shambling packs of homeless people?
And if it's the outdoors and nature people are after, I guarantee my home in a Calgary suburb has a larger, more private yard, with more trees, and more greenspace and parks nearby, than 99 per cent of the homes in Airdrie.

^I'm not saying you're incorrect on any of that, and I'm not necessarily defending Airdrie, I'd never move there myself. I agree, I'd rather live in Cranston than Airdrie for example. I just don't get why people go out of there way to dump all over the people that want to live there though
I'll just come right out and admit that I just think Airdrie is ugly. That is just my opinion, but when I go to Okotoks or Cochrane, I kinda think that I could live there, if it made sense. When I'm in Airdrie, all I want is to go to that butcher shop for a sandwich, and GTFO. I don't know what it is... Can't see the mountains? No river? Brown prairie in every direction? Being closer to Edmonton? I can't put my finger on it. And I feel bad for saying this, because my cousin lives there, and she loves it. Different strokes.
