didn't see this result coming, as i was sure this would be a fixed lottery. Given the ramifications of this specific draft, thought they would play it completely safe and have the draft order go directly in the order of standings (buffalo winning the lottery).
pretty annoyed/frustrated at all things hockey all of a sudden. what a crock.
here in toronto, all the radio shows have been stating that landing mike babcock is a pipedream unless they won the lottery, then maybe it would be enough to entice him to come (outside of the millions they'd pay him). wonder if they do something smart this offseason and actually bold to improve or if they are eying if next year's lottery pick includes a stud dman or starting goalie in which case they'll just continue the suck.
i would love it if he somehow refused to play there. Like, i'd go as far as to stop drinking alcohol for a year as a sacrifice if that were to happen.

This is so depressing, for me it was anywhere BUT Edmonton and I would've been excited to see him play. Now? We'll never know how good he is. He's wasted just like Hall, Yakupov, Eberle, Schultz . SO depressing.

As predictable as your response to this outcome.
"Oh my God! That can't be a coincidence!"
Again, what does the league or Bettman gain here? Nothing. They lose a lot. If they really wanted to rig it, a Canadian franchise that sells out regardless of on ice product helps the league very, very little. If he went to a major market in the East you may have a point.
Your theory, is dumb

Which defenseman of any value is going to waive their NTC? Unless they go the Weber route.

I guess the good in all of this, McDavid probably gained Lowe job security for the next 10 years. Being Edmonton's GM must be the easiest job in the world.

I'd like to see a trade embargo levied against the Oilers by the other 29 GMs, but sadly that would never happen.

I'm not concerned. 3 #1s werent the answer, a 4th isnt going to solve anything.
If anything this has just guaranteed that the Oilers are going to be terrible for years to come.
This has solved a grand total of zero of Edmonton's problems. It alleviates some of their central depth issues but all of the glaring problems remain.
I hope the Oilers gonna Oil and name him Captain at the draft podium.

It's really the ultimate test of wills. Edmonton's incompetence and overall no goodness versus Connor's hockey talent and ability... Who will prevail?!?

Was really hoping to see Coyotes or Blue Jackets land the #1 pick. Sabres do just fine with Eichel.
Going thru the teams, there were some I'd prefer not to land CMcD97, and then, of course, were the Oilers. I didn't even consider that they would get him.
Worst. Possible. Outcome.
For him. For hockey.
Shall we start a campaign:
Free McD from MacT

- I really detest player holdouts, but wouldn't this be justified...
- support Connor holding out...

The use of the term "generational talent" doesn't really even make sense, does it?
Seems to me that a "generational talent" would be the kind of player that comes along once in a generation. The last "generational talent" is on TV right now. He's only 27 years old. Is a generation 10 years long now?
This is just semantics and nitpicking, but it bugs me.
And another thing... it's sort of weird to me listening to all these gray-hairs huffing and puffing and hitching their wagons to a teenager. Of course, I'm sitting here on a nice Saturday night talking about said teenager with strangers, so, umm, yeah.

To be honest, I guess this will really tell just how bad the Oilers management really is. If even McDavid can't turn around the franchise, then it pretty much confirms they're one of the worst run franchises of all time.
