Maybe our defense prospects aren't that great, I'll give them that, but to say they have more depth on the blueline in insane. They're top defenseman wouldn't even come close to cracking our top 4.

I know nothing about his skills or how good he is, but his decision alone shows that he's a smart kid with character.
Probably had lots of chances to sign with a team that could play him now and burn a year, but he's looking at the most important thing, the organization and where he will develop best.
Speaks volumes about the kid and the Flames as an organization.
He'll go down and learn the pro game in Adirondack, which will prepare him immensely for his first NHL training camp next season.

Two different listings for his height and weight on the same page.
I'm assuming he's 6'3" 208lbs and the smaller listing is from before he finished bulking up.
Good size, especially if his skating is as advertised.

Seems like a solid pickup with some upside. Nice to have a good defence prospect sign with the Flames.
Don't really know too much about the kid, so will wait to see how he does at camp next year.

A nice signing. And smart move for his advisors.
Talent-wise, Morrison sounds like a second/thirdish rounder good enough to sign. So it's an asset plugged into the system. The rest is up to him.
He's positioning himself in a good place. As others have mentioned, he needs only look across the room to see a NHL All Star who was also undrafted.
Sticking it to the Oilers is a bonus from a fan viewpoint.

Knowing that Morrison was prepared to leave school after his junior year had created a buzz among bird-dogs.
“Fourteen teams were (represented) at the last game and a lot were in to see him,” said Craig Conroy, assistant general manager of the Flames. “Talking to his agent, there were definitely a lot of other teams involved.
“To see guys that have played in college and get a chance, that’s what they want. They want an opportunity to come in and prove themselves.”
For another week, Morrison will tend to academic commitments at the Kalamazoo-based campus. Then he’ll join Adirondack of the American Hockey League.
“Exciting and unknown,” said Morrison. “I know I have to go there and earn a spot to be in the lineup, just show what I have … just prove that I belong there.”
The Flames’ interest in Morrison is understandable — needing to stock their cupboards, particularly on defence.
A two-way rearguard fits the bill.
“I like being on the offensive side of things,” said Morrison, who, in his 115 games at Western Michigan, recorded 54 points and 151 penalty minutes, “but I like taking care of my own end as well.”

Difference being the Flames are competing for a playoff spot while the Oilers just finished drafting 1st overall, yet again.

According to Flames assistant GM Craig Conroy, representatives from more than a dozen NHL organizations showed up for Morrison’s final weekend of NCAA action, proof there was plenty of interest in the 6-foot-3, 208-lb. rearguard.
“He has good size, skates well and a real good shot,” Conroy said. “He’s got some good offensive instincts.”
Morrison registered five goals and 15 points in 37 outings this season with the Broncos.
A right-handed shot and a big body, he’ll try to follow in the footsteps of former teammate Danny DeKeyser, who signed with the Detroit Red Wings after his junior season at Western Michigan and is now a key member of the blueline brigade in the Motor City.
“When I came in as a freshman, I looked up to him,” Morrison said of DeKeyser. “It’s definitely been a help to me to be around him. What he’s doing with the Wings is great for him. Hopefully, it helps me to get to where he is.”
|
Quote:
“With guys like Josh Jooris, to see guys that have played in college and they get a chance, that’s what they want,” Conroy said, referring to another college free-agent now playing a key role for the Flames. “They want an opportunity to come in here and prove themselves, and we say, ‘If you deserve it, you’ll get to play.’ That’s what guys want.
“And I think, looking at our depth chart, (Morrison) is in that 23-year-old age and he’s thinking, ‘I might be a pretty good fit with this team.’ ”

Exactly. The more darts you can throw at the board, the more that will hit. Anticipating literally any one player to hit the target is always a risk because most don't work out like Sven. Just have to hope that 2-3 of Wotherspoon, Culkin, Kulak, Sieloff, Mattsson, Rafikov, Hickey and now Morrison pan out.
