Good value for a player that had stalled in development, was buried on the depth chart and was about to become waiver eligible. I wish it wasn't the canucks, and it better be a 2015 pick, but I can see why BT did this. I have to assume their were no other suitors otherwise I'm sure he wouldn't have been dealt to a rival. Most GMs probably feel the same way the flames obviously do, which is that Sven is unlikely to even be a 2nd line player. BT is being both pragmatic and proactive with this move.

I suspect the 2nd may be used at the draft to move up, acquire another 1st round pick, or potentially a player. I think there is a bigger picture that has yet to materialize.

I was not the big on him at this point, although it does suck when a 13th overall pick ends up being a mid-round 2nd a few season later.

I always liked Sven and think it is a horrible time to trade him. Rumors are his agent asked for a trade a few months ago. If true he can eat $%#$ and has become another filthy diving canuck pos.

Didn't like the trade when I first heard it. After thinking about it, it makes sense; there is a good chance that Sven is not going to beat out Gaudreau, Raymond and Poirier out for a spot in the top 9. Rather have a 2nd round pick today than a fourth round pick in October. Will be interesting to see if he can make the Canucks next year

The Flames attitude to the draft changed in 2011. We went after skill over brawn. Potential over guarantees.

Please don't use these 2nd round picks on plugs.

This team needs defence. Draft defencemen. Draft for high impact potential.

Don't draft players that have been passed over in two drafts.

Dont like it. We send him for another roll at the dice and who ever we pick is most likely 5 years away assuming they are even an NHL player. Couldnt we have packaged him for someone a little further along the development curve. Cant we strike a balance between prime Gio years and some good years of Monahan and Bennettt? (With our Aquisitions)

@DarrenWHaynes
Colborne went 16th, traded 5 years later for a 4th rounder.
Baertschi went 13th, traded 4 years later for a 2nd rounder.
Value diminishes.

Baertschi was either going to make the team between now and October, or we'd lose him for nothing. We've also had a bunch of other winger prospects pass him, so the writing was on the wall.

Sven broke CP

Feels like the Flames are selling low, and hate that he is going to the 'Nucks.

Guess we'll see if a fresh start turns him around.

Bob is a speed and pressure guy as well and I don't think Sven has the gears to be very effective at the NHL level unfortunately.

As others have said in this thread.

He struggled to break the line up, be struggled to make an impact when in the line up.

Could it be an issue between him and Hartley (perhaps they don't mesh), but Hartley has seemed to be good at living by the "Nothing Given, Always Earned".

I think a 2nd round pick is good, for a player that isn't/hasn't been able to crack the line up, hell he has been trying since the 11/12 season.

Selling low would be waiting until he's waiver eligible.

Irrelevant and terrible logic. Even if he was never gonna play in Calgary the trade makes no sense. You don't give a decent asset to a division rival without at least a respectable return. Now I'm hearing its a 2017 pick? Even worse. Just a dumb move all around.

Treliving took a risk after seeing Ferland, Poirier and Granlund making huge strides. Hudler and Gaudreau probably seen as the only wingers this team can keep if they want to continue to get big and skilled. Stepping back a bit, seeing how Colborne only went for a 4th and Baertschi's waiver status next year coupled with a still middling progression it's easier to accept. In the end, it's 'asset management' which a lot of us wanted.

Curious with Connolly whose return was brought up as a comparison, what his waiver status is like?

Happy with the trade. Didn't believe they would get a 1st round pick for him.
He has been passed over several times in depth on the Flames and it's not like we have an allstar team here.
JMO i think he lacks confidence from the AHL to NHL transition. I have gotten the feeling that Sven feels he should just be in the NHL. But his game is not a 3rd/4th line player. It just don't think he is capable for those roles. So he has to be a 2nd line player. To be honest he is not good enough to be a 2nd line NHL player not now anyways. So if he isn't in Burke and Treliving plans then trade him and they did.
I expected the Flames would try to move him but what shocks everyone is that it is to Van.

I think most Flame fans are not too upset about what they get in return, it is where he was traded. Some people thinks he is a bust but the guy is still young. Maybe he doesn't fit in with the Burke/Treliving and Hartley plan but trading him to our arch-rival Vancouver Canucks is kind of hard to take.

Don't like the value but understand why the trade was made and if that's the most offered I suppose that's that. Not sure why the urgency... Couldn't wait til offseason to see if there was more out there?

Made sense to trade Baerstchi but the value isn't there in my mind.

This. 100x this.

I get people are worried because it's the Canucks but this is great value for Baertschi.

Three 2nd round picks now!
