In my opinion, how air crew communicate with passengers/customers/guests is often overlooked. We do have guidance on how to communicate during an emergency. It is short, sweet and to the point with an extra emphasis on reassurance, but everything else often comes down to an experience\comfort with public speaking thing.
With things like a reject(and the following decision making process), holding for weather, missed approach due to weather, thunderstorm avoidance, maintenance issues at the gate that are rectified with people on board and so on, keeping the people informed is important, but in my opinion how we do that could use some improvement, and I have seen it as a passenger on many airlines. Quite frankly what is not a big deal to us, when conveyed in such a way can take on a whole different meaning to a infrequent traveler.
It is kind of amusing how as described in the post above, the very use of the two words "can't find" or "can't see" can convey such different meanings to different people. We are often guilty of "dumbing down" technical pilot talk to the point where it just becomes confusing.
All I can really say to your point is that the communication aspect could use some work on our part. Absolutely it can, and I think as a whole it is something we are aware of. If you know any aviators or have to the chance to talk to any, bring up this very same point. What many don't realize is the planning and decision making that goes into that simple flight from Terrace to Prince George.
There are many legalities built into planning a flight that makes it a very safe thing to do and the crux of it is, that perceived confidence you have in the pilots and the system in place can all be thrown out the window with a pilot coming on the PA and announcing "We can't find the runway!!"
