I actually kind of secretly hope that contract stays on the Avs books and we might be able to take a run at either Nathan MacKinnon to a offer sheet (ya ya ya I know, Burke) and if that fails, go after Tyson Barrie. Fills the 2 needs I see we have - a game breaking scorer, and a top 4 dman.

Not to mention that Iginla is only on pace for 10 goals this season. Even if a team had the cap space, I don't think they will be offering up a lot for him.
Granted, Iginla is a notorious slow starter, but things aren't looking good for him so far.

Looking at the teams that have the cap space to take him, I think it comes down to the Blue Jackets and Islanders. The former looking to fill the loss of Nathan Horton, the latter - well Iginla is big ticket name for a team that has trouble attracting/keeping talent.
I had mentioned this during the summer threads on the Avs, but you really got to wonder how big of a loss Paul Statsney was to that team.

Blue Jackets are worse than the Avs so far this year.

true... I guess this is just speculating which teams can take on bigger contracts.
Realistically, acquiring these types of contracts (and yes, I realize today is probably the worst day for me to say this) usually happen in the off season..... still lots of games left in the season, and Colorado is probably better than their record indicates though again, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some truth to their record in the loss of Statsney.

To be fair, they're missing half their team, especially some key players including Bobrovsky.
http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=100817
They've lost a crazy amount of man games to injury so far. They were pegged to at least be a playoff team this year by just about everyone. The Avs don't have the same excuse.

All teams will go through injuries, but the Blue Jackets are hit by injuries to their best players, with a young stud prospect skipping training camp on top of it.
They may be done this season because of it.

I think some fans want Iginla to win a cup more than Iginla himself.

How many "I'm going to get a cup" moves have actually resulted in a cup? Bourque (a year later). Can't even think of someone else.

the current forward line-up is not a playoff team:
Glencross-Monahan-Jones
Gaudreau-Granlund-Hudler
Baertschi-Byron-Setoguchi
Bollig-Bouma-Jooris
...But swap Colborne, Raymond, Backlund and Stajan for Bollig, Setoguchi, Baertschi, and Jones/Byron and it's starts to look possible.
We've got four out of seven defenders.. Wideman should be playing the 6th man, however, not the 4th.
Look at the combined stats for Diaz, Smid and Engelland:
35GP 0G 3A -4 33PIM 24SOG
There is very little in terms of contributions coming from those three players.
I'm hoping by January we can see Sieloff and Wotherspoon in place of Smid/Engelland, but that's probably rushing it. Although I think S/E is a bad pairing, S/W might actually do worse against NHL competition night in night out. Now would be the time to get them up and learning from Giordano though, whilst he's still riding aloft the clouds with a bolt of lightning in his raised hand.

Isn't Seiloff currently a healthy scratch at the AHL level having played roughly 50 games the past 2.5 seasons? How/why is that guy going to come in and help us be a play-off team?

He's not that guy, I didn't say he was. He's just the guy I want to be that guy eventually. If he can play in the pros the style that got him drafted in the first place, he'll be a better version of Smid: a hard hitting stay-at-home defender. Ramage is closer than Sieloff, but neither appear to be that close. Culkin has actually been the big surprise on the backend so far in Glen Falls.
It'd just be nice to try out some of these young guys instead of watching a pair that you know aren't going to improve get hemmed in night after night. When they (Smid/Engellend) get stuck in the defensive end with the 4th line, it's the same nightmare every time.
I don't see any trade forthcoming for a young defender. Even glencross, Baertschi and hudler aren't going to convince a team to give up on a solid nhl ready defensive prospect. It's gotta happen internally.
I say trial by fire. We are the Flames, after all.

Wotherspoon will get his chance once one of the defenseman get hurt. It's just a matter of time.

So if the Flames are in a playoff position in late February/early March, do we consider trading for Iginla? That solves our top six RW problem in a hurry.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Iginla
Hudler-Backlund-Raymond
Glencross-Colborne-Jooris
Bouma-Stajan-Byron
Giordano-Brodie
Wideman-Russell
Smid-Engelland
Hillar

#1 I don't think we should be trading our prospects/picks regardless of our position in the standings this year. Just stay the course.
#2 Iginla isn't going anywhere in the first year of a 3 year deal.

I wouldn't give up any young players, prospects or draft picks to derail our good mojo we got going on...... but if they're willing to let him go for free, maybe take back Setoguchi...... I think it would be cool story. I loved the Fleury comeback, even though it was a pre-season game..... Iginla just doesn't look good in an Avs jersey. Always looked best with the a Flaming C.
Gio keeps the captaincy though, and keep the leadership the same.... I want our go to guys (Backlund, Hudler, etc) to keep being our go to guys. We got a great thing going on, it would be great just to add players and not disturb it.

People hate on his leadership, and maybe it's deserved.
But my personal view of Iginla is that he would be an extremely exciting addition to the locker room. Given how exciting that room would be already if we were in the playoff hunt... it would be an explosion of awesome if Jarome-Frikken-Iginla was suiting up next to Monahan and Gaudreau

I just don't understand how a fan of this team can witness the complete culture change that happened with this team after the trade and want Iginla back.
Love his time as a Flame ... but it's over. I wouldn't want to reintroduce him into this locker room. The new leadership group is not established enough to overcome that imo.
