It's 2.9 with a salary cap of 69 million. The team isn't close to the cap and doesn't look to be there anytime soon.

How is it a mistake?

If you're implying that Finger was signed by Burke, he wasn't. That was Fletcher.

I don't love the contract, but at this point it doesn't hurt the Flames. They needed another NHL defenceman and I guess they see him as that guy.

Great signing. 1 step closer to McDavid if this guy gets a regular shift.

Here are Engelland's comparables. Based on the shorter term I don't think 2.9 a year is all that out of the realm of possibilities.

Couple months ago I was hoping the Flames will improve their team toughness. Not necessarily getting more pure fighters but people who can play 8-12 minutes a game. I watched Bollig and Engelland play on TV and thought they would be good players to add. Some skills and decent middleweight protectors. The salary is arguable but I don't have problem adding gritty players like these two. We did have a soft team after MacGrattan, Westgarth and SOB.

Great signing! Brings toughness to the back-end while adding fear into opposing teams wingers that have to meet up with him in the corner.

Exactly. No one is going to play for us right now unless we overpay. The salary cap is $69 million. Guys are going to be get more money no matter what. The term is fine because he'll be off the book when we really need the cap space.

This contract may be difficult to trade.
How does he stop that from happening unless said rookie or player makes 20+ million a year?

It's absolutely a mistake, but that doesn't mean it's a fatal one. If cap floor is such a problem I'd rather we overpay some of our homegrown RFA's a little bit

Yeah its a high salary but that means little in the grand scheme of things. 3x3 does not handcuff the club at all. I do think though that this narrows the door for taking on a bad cntract plus an asset from another team, going forward this contract will not be an issue.

Didn't Burke say something along the lines of, GM's make their biggest mistakes on July 1st. Maybe he should pass that little tidbit onto Treliving.

Ouch.
To be fair, he did have the balls to drop gloves with McGrattan.

He and Bollig were two of the ten players to "fight" McGrattan last year. I'm thinking if you want to be a Flame all you need to is pick a fight with #16.

What does it stop the Flames from doing and/or hurt the team?
