The Bruins don't have the cap space to resighn Iginla, especially when they have to pay his bonuses this year.

Bruins, MMF. Unless I've gone completely crackers, the Bruins are not in Tampa Bay.

Maloney should have known better, MacTavish obviously prefers Skype, since it's free. He was probably sitting there all day waiting for a response to his offer.
Lol. Sounds like if MacTavish waited until Maloney called back, he would not have to take Purcell.

#Coyotes GM Don Maloney says #Oilers' Craig MacTavish called him this morning about Sam Gagner. Called back, TB deal was done.
I guess you could somewhat conclude that they wanted Percell and maybe thought he wouldn't sign with them once bought out by the Lightning so took on the remainder of the deal?
The Tampa Bay Fightn' Bruins are the newest expansion team.
Ah, that explains it.
(Does this mean the Lightning are moving to Seattle or Quebec? But that part makes sense, 'cos you know, Lightning never strikes twice in the same place.)

At the start of the day Yzerman was going to buyout Purcell and pay him 6M not to play for the Lightning.
Then MacTavish came along and offered Gagner, so Yzerman was down to paying 3.33M to remove Purcell from the team.
Then Arizona came along and now Yzerman got a 6th round pick in addition to only paying 3.33M to remove Purcell from the team.
Arizona gets Crombeen and a Gagner at 3.33M for the next 2 years at the cost of a 6th round pick.
And then there's Oiler fans who somehow think they came out ahead with a player who a couple hours ago was going to have his contract bought out.
because the Oilers get a winger with size for Gagner...who clearly has negative value based on the fact TB is retaining 1/3 salary and only fetching a 6th rounder..and trade Gagner before his NMC kicks in
trading Gagner for a 6th AND retaining salary (which they can't do anyways) to Arizona would be disastrous...we'd still need a winger to replace him and overpay in the UFA market

not sure how this doesn't benefit the Oilers
So getting a player back for Gagner in Percell that was going to be bought out by the Lightning is what constitutes for a win these days for Oilers fans? Have things really got that bad that you guys celebrate trading bad contract for bad contract?

Haha. Quite the condescending way to be wrong

unrestricted free agency means you give up nothing to get something, and I guess that is exactly what the Oilers did

who cares if he was gonna get bought out? doesn't make him a less useful player....
bad contract? so...Oilers aren't hurting for cap space
a change of scenery for both players could be good
