It lacks the prestige. Players give it their absolute all to win at the Olympics. They dream of beating Canada or Russia or the US.
This will be an all star game. You think a player for Sweden is going to play on a broken ankle so that they can beat NA U-23's?
No. Cause it's ####ing dumb.

I remember the 2004 World Cup.
Wasn't the same as the 2002 Olympics but it was still a fun tournament that showcased some good talent.

The 1996 World Cup was a nail-biting thrill (and I still hold a grudge over that one).
2004 was pretty awesome, although strangely I don't remember it as well as 96. The one thing that stands out was Kipper proving he wasn't a flash in the pan, guiding Finland to a finals appearance.

To those suggesting Ekblad could make TC, keep in mind that at the Olympics last year, Subban was an extra and Giordano didn't make the team.
Other than maybe be a desire to introduce some young guys for experience (ignoring the under 23 team for a moment), there is little to no chance that Ekblad would make TC straight up right now.

In September, few if any of the players are even close to peak physical condition. In the middle of winter, when the Olympics are held, different story. So even though the World Cup isn't a bad idea, it's not guaranteed to performed at the highest level.

There were even some skeptics on this board as recent as last summer who thought that comparison was stupid. Brodie still has a long ways to go, but there were points in this year where he was as dominant as Keith and Doughty are. Brodie still needs to work out some inconsistencies in his game but that comes with being a young player.

Would be nice if they took Brodie, instead of one of the "classics" like letang or seabrook.

I know many of you hate the idea of the 23U team, but the acquisition of Hamilton gives Flames fans one more reason to cheer for the young guns.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Hamilton should all be locks to make the team, and Bennett has a very good chance to be there as well.

Poor McDavid can't get away from any of that Oilers filth.
So I guess McDavid, Nurse, and Reinhart are locks then.

I imagine McDavid will be a lock. RNH might be the only other one. Maybe Nurse if he breaks out.

I know it wasnt Chiarelli himself but the optics are pretty funny.
Sure, lets make the GM of the worst team in the league the GM for the World Cup. Why not?

I hope the U23 team wins just so the league looks stupid after.

I would be OK if there were no Flames players on any of the world cup teams. Don't need them getting injured in a useless tournament ahead of a promising NHL season.

It'll take time to really gain esteem but I like the U23. If they did happen to win it those players would have a chip on their shoulders. You know damn well when they go to their actual respective teams they aren't going to let the young kids beat them like they did.
Having the young team win might actually be best for the tournament in the long run. The veterans would not like losing to them ever again.

Is there any doubt Canada will win it?
