Yeah, I can understand that. The anonymity is one of the best things about the internet, and one of the worst things about the internet.

In general Fans are way too harsh on the rumor and insider thing.
A media member will state a rumor and the second it doesn't come through he is making stuff up.
That just isn't how it works. There are likely 100's of trade scenarios, UFA discussions, etc that happen between the GM's/agents everyday, and I would say that maybe .1% of those discussions actually lead into a deal happening.
Add into that situations where a "source" gives you a bad tip (happens to everyone in any type of job) and then you have the reason for conflicting information.
Edit: Also for those looking at just the twitter conversation there does have to be some defense for MMF.
Millions came on here when MMF was banned and started posting remarks against MMF a) Using MMF's real name (since removed) and b)Knowing MMF was banned and couldn't post back. That is what sparked the twitter anger for MMF.

Guys let's not spend a lot of time talking about a guy that can't defend himself on here right now. Stick to hockey stuff.

I think it would be pretty hard to cover a team like the Oilers without saying something derogatory about the the direction of their "leadership".
For that he can have a pass in my book. I would not want his job.

I agree as he's probably trying to deflect attention from the deplorable depths the franchise has sunk. A good company man.

Honestly, I feel bad for Geno. He has to deal with such a crappy team, organization and rabid fan base who is very much justified in their anger. I think he does a pretty good job considering the circumstances.
Just one question Rog, is Friedman a Cancuks fan?

I have never got that vibe from him that he's a Canucks fan. Did you hear something that he may be?
FYI: Just a hunch but I think John Garrett may be a Canucks fan.

Absolutely. I have a ton of respect for Roger putting himself out there on a message board, yet there are guys who go right after him. Should he be above reproach? Absolutely not.
But some posters shouldn't deliberately try to hook a guy who is clearly adding positively to the content of the board.

CP was always more active than Beyond, wasn't it? I barely went there, but when I did they seemed to just have a few active topics (I mean with actual discussions going on with many members) at any given time.

You know, I've been wondering this for sometime - how come our media guys seem to break less Flames news than some of the other National guys? Take a look at Dater in Colorado, who seems to break everything Avs related or Portsline in CBJ.
Not trying to be inflammatory or say that you aren't doing your jobs, but it does seem like our local guys don't have some connections that others have.

It was a pretty busy place last decade. I recall a lot of stuff going on between 2004-2010. It's slowed down now as a lot of the original posters are getting up there in age and a lot of the younger generation is less interested in cars compared to the 90's and early 00's where riced out Honda's were in style.

I only read the first page where there was discussion on sign and trade. Not sure if it was discussed more before the thread apparently got derailed.
Quote:
1. Teams can only have three contracts on the books where they’ve retained salary in a trade
2. Teams can keep only up to 15 per cent of the salary cap in a given year, meaning they would max out at $9.645-million under the $64.3-million cap that’s likely to be in place in 2013-14 and 2014-15
3. Only 50 per cent of a contract can be kept
4. A contract can only be traded in one of these deals twice
|
If Murray doesn't mind spending some pennies, there could be good potential to get a great return.
Recent comparables would be Pominville (5 x 5.6) and Steen (3 x 5.8)
Let's say we sign Cammy to 2 x 5.8M, he would be pretty darn attractive for 2 years at 2.9M. I think that would probably be worth a 1st and a prospect or 2...

I still think he's been the best Flames PBP announcer since Whalen.

Loved Roger's play by play. He had such a solid "call-voice" if that's even a term. Still would like to see him move into that roll again at some point.

The relationship is tighter.
Millions I think was alluding to that in relation to Friedman. Because he doesn't cover a specific team, what he can report doesn't necessarily have the same personal impacts on his career.
If Millions reports something that is amazing for us fans to hear but really jeopardizes either a source within the organization or the organization itself, he has to weigh that against his future career.
Also, even though he is routinely in contact with a variety of league, player and team officials from around the NHL, most of his source material is likely connected to the organization in some way. Even if he reports something that didn't come from the organization, it could still get someone into hot water if they are believed to be the source, even if they aren't.
For the local journalist there is much more at play politically than there generally is for a national broadcaster. The downside though, is generally you don't get those deep connections in a region that can really serve you well in the future.
It's a tough spot, I think, to be reporting on rumours in the NHL as a region broadcaster. Millions doesn't even have the framework and support of a print media outlet like someone such as Francis or Duhatschek who's fortunes aren't directly tied to the organization. While Millions isn't employed directly by the flames (like his counterpart to the north), his position as a broadcaster is predicated on the one team. Can't bite the hand that feeds.

^ ^ True, while I was not referring to Roger specifically (as he does seem more connected than some other guys), he also has the unique opportunity to cultivate sources from other organizations which would give him an advantage in breaking some news and also have it not directly point to someone in Calgary feeding him that information.
