I really don't see him making less than $3.5. He's one of our best defencemen and we have lots of cap space. He knows this and I don't think he'll settle for less than $3.5 million. I think he can easily get $3.5 million as a UFA. I think he'll want something like $4 million for 5 years. I still think they settle at $3.8 million for 3-5 years. Could easily make $4 million as well but I wouldn't go any higher than that.

Man, I know we have cap space but 4 million is a lot for a guy that before this season was a 6/7th defenseman. He's on pace to smash his previous best season for points and he's only a -1 on a team that gets scored on a lot but is this a case of a guy trending upwards or is this season a one time aberration? Don't get me wrong, love what he's done this year and would love to see his name on an extension, but I hope it's a lot closer to the 3 million AAV.

If Russel were open to this offer it would probably be done by now. Great deal for both sides IMO

I wouldn't give Russell more than 2 years. He's had one good year, it is not enough to hand him a long term deal. The only way I consider a longer deal is if it is for a low cap hit (under 2.5) and front loaded so the cost of a potential buyout is minimized.

More then 3 years for Russell is tough to give out. I'm sure Burke won't give that to a young guy like him who hasn't proven himself (at this level) for at least 123 games (1.5 seasons)... I understand he's a UFA, BUT he does NOT deserve 2 times his current salary over 4 years... 2.25 year 1... 2.75 year 2... 3.5 year...Bam. 3years/$8.5
